Best way to soften them is just to wear them. Just put them on in the house until they start to break in.
The lining is behind the leather which itself is not known for being waterproof. MY TXC Infinity boots are still doing fine after nearly 19k miles and 10 months of ownership and i've done nothing to them but then not all boots are up to their standard.
