These same ones are also for sale on Ebay btw
|
Hi have been advise that Givi have made a tall screen for the 660 z.If you check out
www.givi.co.uk there are a couple of pictures.

I'm intending to get the MM flip screen, since I'm a shade under 6'4" and will no doubt be catching the wind a bit.
Can anyone tell me how much taller it is than the production screen? I just want to put up a makeshift one to see if it makes enough of a difference. :) Alex |

I've been experimenting with a cut down fly screen taped to the top of mine it definitely smoothed things out and reduced wind noise. On a couple of long days out involving motorway rides it has convinced me to go for the higher MM screen. I'm ony 5' 10" . |

How did that new screen work out Gregor?
Am doing a smallish trip this weekend so I'll test mine out, but all feedback is good. :) |
Just ordered the metal mule one 49 plus 6.50 delivery ,hopefully will be slighttly better than the stock one

I think a lot of the buffeting is coming up through the forks like on the BM GS's

Much better than the Yam original but not as good as my gaffer taped on lash up, looks a lot better though. Agree with Big Den re the buffeting. I used to get the same on my Fazer but it isn't too obtrusive. |
This week I have had a new tall screen made for the Tenere. It seems to be
better than the previous pne http://i472.photobucket.com/albums/r...to215_tn-1.jpg |
I am after one for two reasons to cut down on buffeting and give more room for the TT satnav bracket as i need it tilting higher and cannot as it hits the screen. looking at the photo's here they all look to be the same distance from the clocks
|
Just bought one from metal mule because they are the cheapest and it fits perfect 49 + 6.50 delivery
|
Jasext - what height is the MM one? I did a small trip up to Teesside yesterday and got battered around quite a bit, so I'll probably just get the tallest one I can find.
BS-Motoparts have one at 48cm, but it's quite pricey and Givi do one though I can't find any stats for it, or the price for that matter. |
The MM tall screen is around 85mm taller than stock. It will make a bit of a difference but not huge.
|
Has any one who has fitted a tall screen found that it improves things?
i get a drumming noise from my standard one wich gives me a headache , so i need to change but dont know which would be the best option? I took the screen off completly today and it was much better without it so maybe cutting down the standard maybe the way to go? any thoughts? ta. |
or even..............is anyone brave enough to put some holes in the original screen to help with this problem we're all having with the buffeting.
which reminds me i need to get some food on....:teaandcake[1]: |
with my standard screen my head was getting battered from side to side, with my MM screen i get a light vibration on the peak of my tour-x. haven't tried it without a screen tho.
|
Sans screen smooths things out but its not the answer, I still have about 8mm above normal screen gaffa taped on and its better but not great.
Interested to hear more feedback of the metal mule screen otherwise thinking about making a spoiler does anyone with a high front fender experience the same buffeting ?:Itching_KFKKYE: |
im going to continue without the screen till i find soething that sorts it!
am thinking it may be to do with the angle of the standard screen ? i dont know if anyone makes one with a backwards slope on top wondered if this might help? |
I have no problem taking a saw to my standard one if someone in the know can give me an idea what holes or slots to cut in and what tool to use ie drill / dremmel ? My Pan touring screen had a V shaped cutout either side may start there.
|
Has anyone tried to put some spacers between the screen and the light cowl ? What I mean is taking out the screen screws, putting some spacers to bring the screen 'forward of the bike' and re-fixing. you'd need longer screws though
A bit random, but mayne just a little more airflow behind the screen could reduce the vacum in the cockpit and help ?? You see it on sportsbikes, where the air can flow asymetrically both sides of the screen (inside and out), |
I tried that but only had two spacers for the top screws and didn't feel too happy about only having the screen held on with 4 screws so bent the flip in it instead.
My personal belief is that the best screen design would actually be about 75mm shorter than stock, but then it would look like turd, and I am a vain man ;) |
The reason the big touring bikes have the cutouts in their screen is the amount of protection the screen gives creates a large vacuum behind it which can lift the front of the bike up making it light at high speed. By letting some air through with the slits the vacuum is reduced significantly previnting this.
The Tenere of course does not need this due to the venting that comes up from the forks behind the screen. You would only need to add the vents to the screen if you blocked this air from rising up from the forks as mentioned in another thread in this forum. |
Interesting, do you have the data sources that say that?
It was my understanding, based upon experience, that the vents were there to provide cool air for the rider when riding in hot conditions as the screens were designed to keep all the weather off the rider. I had no problems with the front going light on any of the touring and sports touring bikes I've ridden and owned. The exception being the Hayabusa but that was due to rapid opening of the throttle. |
I can't find my origional data source, but it was with reference to the larger more vertical screens on a tourer (eg pan) rather than smaller sport tourer screens. The smaller ones would not have sufficient an effect to provide noticable lift. The effect would also increace with speed so is different from acceleration lift from a powerful bike. I would not expect to find a retail bike on sale these days with a screen/fairing that would not be corrected for this of course.
To point out the effect of the reduced vacuum consider that my adding a top-box behind me to reduce vacuum drag improved my mpg on the motorway by 2-3mpg (5%). A large screen would have a much bigger effect than that. The slits will also provide cool air of course which is an added bonus (read selling point to explain the feature to those that might not understand) |
Interesting, I've only ridden a Triumph Trophy, Pan, FJR and BMW RT. The Trophy didn't have a vented screen ( I had it for a few trips) but can't remember on the others.
|
pan has 2 V cutouts either side on the screen, got one if you want photo's, remember years ago on the GS site an aircraft techy in US cut some special Vshapes in his screen to eliminate the mega buffeting on his GS.
I did last night wind mine up on the m40 for the first time, sitting @ 85-90 i came back with a headache, the noise and buffeting was worse than a GS ! Gonna have to sort something out soon. |
I've done a couple of things to improve things:
(BTW, I found there's a big difference between the clean air from an empty road and having a car/lorry in front. Even a small car 300m ahead on the motorway will cause bad air/buffeting) Rather than swap the screen i made on of these: (copied from http://www.aerotrim.co.za/ ) http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/m...909/Screen.jpg I then glued a piece of metal bar under the lip of the peak of my Tour X to stop it vibrating. I can now cruise quite happily at 80mph. The 'screenlette' above does make a difference, but I think if I had stopped the peak of my Tour X vibrating first then I probably wouldnt need the screenlette?? Need to do a test I guess......... Nick. |
We should get together Nick and have a screen swap, you can try my home bent flip and I can try your screenette! :)
|
I am hoping MRA do a vario screen which should be along the designs of your excellent mod
|
a vario screen might be the answer, i get a headache from my screen like u do big den, so def need to sort something soon, have no screen off at the moment but it doesnt look as good!
|
I think a mra or vario screen is probaly the best bet for the Tenere. I'm certianly looking out for one.
Interestingly I don't usually find the buffeting that bad on the Ten, I guess I partly have got used to it. The screen is generally ok up to 75-80, and sometimes up to 90 depending on the wind (the wind direction has a big effect on this). I've never had smooth airflow over 90mph though in the lat 6 months I've been riding it on the m/way. The engine starts to find it hard work at that point though so its strats getting quite tiring all round. |

I replaced my original screen with an MRA, which helped and looked better but didn't quite give the results I was looking for, so I have attempted to make my own....not easy I might add.
I did this by laminating thin strips of wood to get the shape I wanted. The idea was to form more of a wind barrier by the air being deflected off and through the screen. I did this by making a venturi which squeezes the air out at a relatively higher speed, forming a better wind barrier. I have been working on this for the last few weeks and had it to a stage where i could try it out this evening. There is a big improvement, 100% better IMO. At 120km/h a little drumming can be felt by your ears (which is a little irritating), at 140 to 160 its calm with a little flutter on the top of the shoulders. The drumming may be the screen vibrating a little as its not perfect being hand made. So will have a better look at that. Here are a few pictures of the prototype. |
Wow that's some good woodwork skills you've got there. Now if only they made transparent wood!
I think the screen on the Tenere is a little bit more vertical than on the old one looking at your pictures so it's going to be hard to get a good design - and angleing the screen back a bit more is not possible because of the mounting brackets and hitting your head on it if offroad. |
Anyone who has fitted a high front mudguard, has that helped reduce the wind buffeting from through fork/yolkes?
