You'll have to convert it to metric yourself (I'm too old to do millimetres!)

Thanks, inches work for me!

Question in regard to the genuine Yamaha panniers for the Tenere: where are the mounting points for the support struts? The reason i ask is because i have a Givi plate and topbox fitted to my bike, can i still fit the panniers?
Many thanks for your advice/help

tripletom 20-03-09 14:07

Pillion footrests and the 10mm hole in the rear subframe just underneath the grab rails.

Yes you can, but maybe the box is wide enough to block the lids of the panniers so they can't be opened. How wide is it?

ukiboy 21-03-09 13:06

Yes, box is quite wide (Givi Maxia) and it may well block opening of the pannier lids but thats not a big issue, so long as it doesn't intefere with fitting of the panniers. Thanks for the advice folks:coolsmiley:

I just received an e-mail from Yamaha that they're now selling innerbags for the Tenere top- and sidecases.

Innerbag for the topcase (11D-W0756-00-00): 49,75
Innerbag for the sidecas (11D-W0753-00-00): 34,75

Thanks Reichegg for letting us know. I just looked them up but they have no info on whether it is waterproof. Judging from the original size of the cases, the innerbags may further limit the already limited size of what it can hold. Looks good though.

I'd like to have Yamaha clothes with this logo, like T-shirts/sweater and ballcap. They do have such for the MT-01 and R-1, so maybe sometime in the near future? Wishful thinkin' !!

I have contacted a company called pelican. I use their cases in my job and they are solid. They are used by special forces worldwide for all sorts of items they come in many sizes and are water proof. the prices are not too bad either

http://www.waterproof-cases.co.uk/pe...ases-c-26.html

I have asked them if they have looked into the pannier market for motorcycles and if they can make a kit to adapt the boxes for use as panniers and will forward the response once i get it.

Hi Jim - I agree the Pelicans would make/are excellent panniers - you might want to try google, or the search facitilty on here!

There is a company who already make adapters/brackets to mount Pelican cases onto either their own racks (for certain bikes) or the Givi or SWMotech frames for the Tenere...

http://www.cariboucases.com/

Scottnet already has a set on his bike, as do one or two others I believe.

Search in the Tenere luggage section for Pelican or Caribou or Scottnet and you should find loads of details...

I'd love to see a way to quick release the Pelicans to the Touratech frames (which seem to be the neatest/strongest design so far...) in a minimalist way - I think it would be feasible to use the lower TT plastic pucks (the ones with the lip), plus have a metal channel that locks over the 18mm tube, similar to how Caribou do theirs, but specifically to fit the 18mm round tube?

Of course I doubt Pelican themselves would bother with something like this (however, at least they honour the warranty on the cases that Caribou modify - which is worth remembering) - but I'm sure it is something that could be fabbed up pretty easily? - the compression locks are available separately, so that should make it easier... if I wasn't embroiled in a rally bike build, I'd be looking a this myself...

Perhaps when Peatbog has finished his bash plate / rad guard / and whatever else is on the list... eh?

interesting thread this is.

does anyone know whether there are aftermarket panniers that fit the original Yamaha fitment kit?

The previeous owner of my Ten installed the Yamaha rack but didn't buy the panniers.
I really like the unobtrusive look of the Yamaha kit and find it a bit silly to buy another rack and get rid of this one. But with the comments on this forum about the quality of the Yamaha pannier locks and keys I was wondering if there exists an alternative that also fits the Yamaha rack?

Not a chance! - the Yamaha kit is specific to accept the moulded (plastic) attachments on the Yamaha panniers... however, I'm liking your thinking regarding the simplicity of the Yamaha frames...

It might be possible to fab something (similar to my suggestion above) that hooks onto the upper rail of the Yamaha set-up, and likewise, a 'foot' attachment that locates on the aluminium hook on the back of the pillion footrests?

The only downside with this sort of attachment is that in the event of a fall, the panniers themselves are not braced between each other (like they would be with a full-on pannier rack like Touratech etc.) - but for a lot of people, this might prove to be the ideal compromise - the choice of decent boxes but on the Yamaha OE fitting frames...

Hmmmmm...

tripletom 10-06-09 16:28

Anything is possible JMo, surely you know that ;) Even a brace bar could be made I would've thought for the back end.

jimthebrit 10-06-09 16:59

I was actually looking at the pelican UK website and i noticed the have a set of wheels that clip into the case body. These wheels could be removed and the bracket adapted to allow for the box to be fitted to the frame. May be a little jiggery pokery to get it done but it looks feasible. I would have a go myself but i am off for 5 weeks to work in the land of sand .

Jenny - you could always use the upper half of the TT mounting kit? i'm sure you're aware of this, so what is it that puts you off the idea? mine take only moments to undo.

Of course - it's just the 1550 Pelicans open sideways (rather than top loading) so the danger is stuff will fall out while you're trying to undo the pucks you see... I'm just suggesting it would be nice to QR them without having to open the case at all?

Peatbog 11-06-09 10:02

Ahhhh, of course - sorry, forgot the Peli's opened sideways......:bricks:

I'm sure some wag will come on here and say "but they do make a top loading case" (in face Caribou do offer it as an option), but personally I think it looks clumsy, and is smaller than the 1550s too...

Perhaps if I buy a pair of Pelican cases, it's another 'little project' for the future?!

stevied1969 11-06-09 10:44

There's a few Pelican Pannier projects on this site, with people using various options to mount them.

My key snapped in the lock on the first trip and in the first week. That was nearly a month ago and I'm still waiting for the second fix as the first failed and didn't make it out of the dealers.

My view is a set of soft bags or a Givi set would have been a better alternative given the price and availability af the other aluminium cases.

My view is yamaha have got quite a bit of work to do before their boxes can be taken as serious contenders for the type of riding the tenere is meant for.

Think carefully before splashing the cash on the Yamaha kit.
:director2: still waiting!

To add to the snapping key:
The locking system with the OE side boxes are extremely cheap and nasty, no strength in them what so ever. Though there is “a way” to do it properly, but in the end it just isn’t worth the money, time and risk. Imagine breaking the key in some remote place, or even at home, and your essentials are deep inside!:angry9:

The key snapping is NOT what I’d call an isolated *ahem* case…

…I would recommend an independent company that specialises in boxes etc (MetalMule, Givi et al) rather that the sad, embarrassing, won’t last a lifetime, plastic money spinning, fashion accessories…allegedly.

Choose wisely…say I.

Oh well, a bit late for me. I have just fitted the Yam boxes as I thought they looked pretty tough and where cheaper than the Touratech's. I must say that they feel better than the Suziki ones I had on the DL1000GT! Hopefully they will last me a few years, I might invest in the top box but not sure that it will fit a lid in it. But it is a luxury to put cameras and tripods when dissapearing for a few days!

Molgan 16-08-09 21:11

To comfort those who has the oem panniers; the locks works fine after a long while. Have no problems with them now (but they are still as easy as usual to force open..) and I have never greased or modified them.

mudmover 17-08-09 23:16

Yam Oem Locks

I squirted a blast of WD40 down the locks and they are now so smoooooth!!

Really worth doing...They never "stick"

All the same Iam very gentle with the panniers..

The yam top box will fit a helmet, but possibly not a XL or largest shell size so I'd strongly suggest you try your own helmet first before buying.

The box itself has done me pretty good so far, about 15k motorway miles, not had any major key/lock problems myself but then I'm pretty gentle with it anyway.

warning my new panniers and locks (2nd set with shorter key)
In the alps and stripped off to t-shirt and shorts for day

---t . when returned to bike.
KEY bent in case lock. had to find a garage 25miles away to straighten key and then gently opened to get jacket and trousers out.

when home .sent them back as not fit for purpose.
now just received TT cases and look well up to the job. Only dont send any english instructions for the rack.
oh well cant be too hard...... is it....?

deiaccord 02-11-09 20:02

After one year of owning my Yamaha topbox the locks are starting to get slightly stiff. Took some advice from my dealer and a quick squirt of chain lube in the lock and it's good as new. Did that about 4-6 weeks ago before it needed another squirt again today (which is good given the rain recently).

Wish that I would have read this before last week.
My key had been bending little by little over the last month but still worked, being busy with work and all that I carried on. 1st key snapped and I went to the local keycutters to have a spare cut, he couldn't do it there and then so before I could return with the blank I managed to snap the spare in the lock as well. Now I've realised that it was the lock that was the problem and not just a cheap quality key!!
At present I am opening the boxes with a screwdriver which is shockingly easy until I get time to order and fit new locks.
Lesson learned!!

My key (the original rubbish ones) finally gave up on me this week, thankfully I'd just removed the top box from the bike before it snapped before I tried to open it. Hoping the local yamaha dealer will be able to get me sorted out with the new locks/keys

Quick Update. Dealer got new locks from Yamaha but for some reason a plastic mount they came with was different so they would not fit. Dealer got back on to Yamaha and i'm being sent a brand new topbox!

piotrmacheta 15-06-10 14:39

I have Yamaha boxes and have had similar problems with locks but I think they are OK for occasional tours. I read that for off-roading it's better to use Ortlieb bags but how can I fir these to the bike? Do I need another rack? Asking because the Ortliebs have a lower mounting as well.

tenyamman 15-06-10 19:01

occasional tours......lol

it was the first time i used them and it was the 2nd generation of key type......

I used a pair of dry bags - one Ortlieb dry duffle (size M/35L) for personal effects, and one similar size roll-top type for my camping kit - see photo:

http://i492.photobucket.com/albums/r...8/DSCF0544.jpg

I simply strapped them to the rear seat using a pair of webbing straps through the grab handles... it worked a treat over 23,000 miles, over every kind of terrain...

Shame about your choice of parking location though! :101:

JMo 16-06-10 09:38

Ho ho!

btw. I've just had a look at he Ortlieb website, and my bag is actually known as the 'rack-pack' as I see they also do a 'duffle' which is a slightly different shape... either would be good for the rear seat I imagine...
