My Tenere Mods
Hi all,
in this thread i'll be keeping track of all the mods i'll be doing to my Tenere. Just for myself as a log, but also for you guys to share ideas and experience. I've got it since end 2014 and bought from from a Tenere enthusiast, who got it from another one who highly modified it. See pictures below of the bike how it was when i bought it: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-9...o/PA242398.JPG https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-U...o/PA242399.JPG https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-W...o/PA242392.JPG https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-P...o/PA242393.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-x...o/PA242396.JPG https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Y...o/PA242395.JPG https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-l...o/PA242401.JPG https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-G...o/DSC_3370.JPG https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-E...o/DSC_0461.JPG |
Bike specs:
2008 model non ABS about 39k on the clock The list of mods done to it is quite long: - KTM 690 Enduro front fork resprung and shimmed - KTM 690 triple tree with steering stops - custom top yoke - Front Brembo caliper and master brake cylinder - 300mm Braking disc, - Africa Queens Rally front fender - Custom WP 4014 rear shock with preload adjuster - Talon hub and Excel rims front 3.0x17 and rear 1.85x21 - 47 tooth Supersprox rear sprocket with 520 size chain - Magura X-line EX handlebars with KTM risers - Red foam handlebar grips - Acerbis handlebar wind protectors - SW-Motech pegs - white painted fairing parts - USB power socket in dashboard - custom bolt-on tailtidy sized for German numberplate - KTM front axle protector - custom makrolon rear axle protector - CLS electronic chain oiler - Akrapovic exhaust - PowerCommander V with O2 eliminator - Touratech foam filter - speedo corrector Tuned till perfection on the dyno: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/7u...=w1166-h637-no https://drive.google.com/a/darkhelme...ew?usp=sharing |
What i've done so far:
- swapped air filter for a Off The Road. This model allows me to swap out just the foam on longer dirt trips. The foam is a lot more compact then a complete filter with bracket. Also the filter already in the bike was quite dirty and i couldnt get it cleaned properly. - removed the Stage 2 restrictor ring. Just kept the outer ring. Difference shown in this topic: http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?t=23455 - changed the battery for a Motobatt. I do this on all my bikes together with a MOSFET R/R. The Motobatt battery is lighter, more powerfull an very reliable. And it has easier terminals, they are threaded, instead of a loose nut which you can loose and is harder to get on when there's more connected. (see test of Motobatt http://www.intruderalert.com/cafe/in...topicID=176271) It has proven itself to me on my previous bikes and on a long trip through Africa. See them both on a scale: 800 grams weight difference :083: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-N...113_221434.jpg https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-1...113_221459.jpg The battery bracket had to be modified a little, because the Motobatt lacks the indent on top: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-L...113_221549.jpg - I have still to change the Regulator/Rectifier, but i have one lying around: It is one from a Street Triple and a MOSFET type. The Street Triple had a recall after loads of R/Rs failed, because of a crappy Shunt type version was mounted. Mine died twice, after which i mounted a motobatt and MOSFET and been perfect since. The recall came later on... https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/--...113_221757.jpg - I've removed the rear swing arm protector. I think it didn't match with the front axle guard. I'll probably get a standard black one later on. - I've mounted a Fuzebox, to connect accessoires. I've had a similar fusebox on my Tiger 1050 and liked it a lot: not connecting all accessories directly to the battery or tapping into the loom at different points. I don't have pictures of this one yet |
Meanwhile I've ordered some items from Off The Road:
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-4...o/DSC_0002.JPG - oil filter maintenance kit - AIS plug kit - "cameltoe" for the side stand - magnetic oil drain plug - airfilter with replacement foam - headlight protector Also on the picture is a tube with Dynabeads. Got this for Christmas. It's for easy balancing the tire. The cameltoe is already on the bike. I removed the Akrapovic, which will be sold this weekend, i hope. I will replace it with a single can setup. Better looks, no cat and lighter. Not sure yet if I'll go for the Exan X-Cone Black or a custom setup. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-j...131_145943.jpg Also i mounted a 12v cigarette plug to the left pillion peg mount. Can be used for an airpump or whatever. I had it on a previous roadtrip and it proved very usefull. Pics will follow And i got some second hand Michelin Anakee 3 tires. The current Michelin Siracs are nearing the end, so i found a good deal on an Anakee set with minimal wear. |
Things on my to-do list:
- mount R/R. I'll cut of the current connector and solder on the wires on the connector from the Street Triple. Those are proper connectors: weather proof! - Change wind screen for a higher and clear version - Exhaust for a single can - Completely remove AIS - Proper tail tidy. Current one doesnt match the Dutch sized numberplate. Probably this one if it will match the new exhaust http://www.shamighmoto.co.uk/index.p...660z/tail-tidy - Heated grips. Probably Oxford Heaterz - Proper handguards, the current ones are for wind/weather protection only. I'll probably go for Barkbusters |
Keep the piccies coming:041:
|
Looks too clean. I hate it :-P

I'd rather like riding or modding... One thing i didn't mention on my 2do list, because i haven't figured out how i will go about is, is a chain guide. I've seen some examples: http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?t=17951 http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?...ht=chain+guide http://traildreamer.com/guia-cadenas/ But i'm not to good and equiped for fabricating some metal objects |
Friday i moved the bike into my appartment. With some buddies we pushed it up the stairs
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-S...o/DSC_0028.JPG Time for some farkling! |
Quote:
I would have thought you'd have ridden it up the stairs, what with that fancy suspension! :002: Happy farkling! :D |
Yes, that was kind of the plan, but since I had sold my exhaust it was kind of loud, and I don't want any hassle with the neighbours because I'm putting a bike in the building [emoji2]
Meanwhile I put on a MOSFET regulator https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-H...o/DSC_0041.JPG and a headlight protector. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-L...o/DSC_0042.JPG I have a radiator guard but it won't fit properly. The triple tree touches it at its extremes. I think it can be solved with a little mod to the guard. Now I'm in the process of putting on a tail tidy. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-X...o/DSC_0044.JPG Then I'll do some maintenance, valve check and an oil change. That will be interesting in the livingroom A Exan exhaust is on its way from Italy I'll add photos soon |
And the Fuzebox:
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-V...o/DSC_0036.JPG with a 12V cigarette lighter connected https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-w...o/DSC_0045.JPG And the new OTR airfilter: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-B...o/DSC_0004.JPG |
Meanwhile i've been farkling my bike bit by bit:
a tail tidy from S-moto. Quality of the fit is ok-ish, but could be better. The way the taillight is mounted isnt as sturdy as the original. But the looks i like. Basically it's just a bent piece of metal plate. There isn't any brace like on the original bracket. I think this can be an advantage. The tail is flexible and wont suffer from the constant vibrations from the single engine. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-X...417_212605.JPG https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-a...417_212519.JPG The weight savings are not as huge as i expected. It's about 600gr. The original isn't that heavy: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Z...o/DSC_0206.JPG |
Also i put on my Exan exhaust. I had some work on getting the link pipe to fit properly to the header. It was able to move easily.
Thanks to a tip from Pleiades i used a bit of Bosal Exhaust Gasket Paste. And i made sure the clamp was properly positioned before fastening. Now it's tight as a maiden.... https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-_...o/DSC_0209.JPG All i have to do now before i move it out of my appartment, is close the gap left by removing the original exhaust. Unfortunatly, Exan doesnt provide a plate to close the gap in the undertray. So i will fabricate one myself out of a thin sheet of aluminium. Can't wait to ride my Tenere again! :) Furthermore i mounted fork air bleeders from MotionPro. KTM forks can build up air pressure, which in turn can cause the fork seals to start bleeding. This mod makes it easy to air bleed the forks after each ride. Just press the button and you'll hear some air escape. Simple mod, which will ad a little to the reliability https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-J...o/DSC_0210.JPG I found a GPS Zumo 660 mount on Ebay. It was quite a lot cheaper then the SW-Motech alternative, so i went for it. I'm happy with the result: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-x...o/DSC_0211.JPG and today my Givi windscreen arrived. It's about 10cm higher then the original. Hopefully this will make the air flow better for me (1.90m), because with the standard screen it was a bit annoying. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-m...o/DSC_0212.JPG |
Nice going there! Got myself a Tenere a week ago as well and I would love to hear your experience with the taller screen. I am same height as you, 190, and currently unable to drive visor open because the wind gets directed straight to my eyes.
|
I put on some "new" tires, since the original Siracs were nearly done. I decided to go for some Anakee 3 tires. I was able to find a hardly used pair second hand. In June i'm going on a trip to Andorra and do some light allroading. Later on i'll go for the TKC70 or Heidenau K60s for my trip to the Hard Alpi Tour in Italy.
It was the first time i swapped tires myself. I had a kit from BestRest, BeadBreakr. A handy tool to change/fix tires on the road. I had it since 2011 for a trip through Africa. Luckily i didnt have a flat there, but i was also stupid/brave not to try the kit before i left on my trip :) The changing of the tire went fine, but getting the axle in/out of the wheel proved to be hard. I found out a bush in the wheel was somehow the culprit. I sanded it down a bit and now the axle slides in without a bang. Also i changed the drive cushions, they were pretty worn. Also i could see the studs wearing, despite being covered by the cushions. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-m...o/DSC_0219.JPG and the crud from the cushions https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-b...o/DSC_0215.JPG With the front tire, i could get the bead to seat. I tried a strap, different lubes, aircompressor and so forth. Then i decided to get it done at a shop and get a new tube fixed, since the valve was getting a bit rusty. I should've gotten new tubes anyway, but i forgot and wanted to get the bike riding :) So now all is on. With a friend i ran the bike down the stairs and now it's in the garage again. Had my first short ride yesterday, felt good! But i need to double check everything, if it's properly tightened and working before my trip. So i'll be giving it a proper shakedown soon. |
Good write up as ever Dark Helmet. ...looking forward to the ride report! Steve

I did a short ride yesterday. Had to adjust idle speed, because engine would stall after twisting the throttle at idle. It's at 1500 rpm now. Also put in a CR8EIX Iridium plug, it had a CR7EIX plug. Havent noticed a difference, but will swap back soon and see the effect. Also i booked a dyno run, to see if the bike is properly fueled after my mods. Hopefully i wont forget to film the run :) Still have some work to do on the handlebars. There's some nasty vibrations i want to get rid of. Also i need to reposition the bars so i can fit the barkbuster handguards without them interfering with the windscreen. The bike needs to be done by the end of the month, because then i'll leave for Andorra :o |
The CR8EIX iridium seems to be the correct plug for me.
I changed back recently to the original spec CR7E for a bit of a test and very quickly put the iridium back in. It really does make a difference for me, but maybe because mine was dyno tuned with the iridium plug. When are you in Andorra? I might be there by then! |

Well, today i went for a dyno run.
Appears the engine is running between lean and way too lean. Not helping also, is that the db-killer in the Exan exhaust is not working with the sensor that has to be put down the pipe. So the killer was removed. I've booked it for the 30th for tuning. He will drill a hole in the end of the db-killer to put the sensor through. After tuning a bolt can be inserted in the hole. Wasnt expecting that ditching the intake ring and switching for Akrapovic to Exan would make such a difference. Now i'm looking for a tune that is close to my setup, so we can use that as a base. |
The lack of catalysts in the Exan will make a big difference.
|
That must be it, but I'm sure your tune is already a lot better then the original that came with the bike
Thanks! [emoji482] |
Meanwhile: got more sh#t done:
- set chain slack - mounted Barkbuster VPS handguards - cut windscreen into shape - removed last bit of AIS piping - some adjustment to compression on forks - adjusted speedohealer 90% ready for my upcoming trip to Andorra :D Below some further details: For adjusting the chain slack, i used the elaborate method of putting the swingarm in line with the swingarm axle and output shaft. In the photo below i drew the line. On the photo it doesnt line up perfectly, partially because the position from where the photo was taken gives a slightly misleading view, and partially because i didnt use a string, but did it by the naked eye :) Anyhow, i removed the bolt from the dogbone/linkage and lifted the rear wheel An easy job, but you should determine the tight spot on the chain before hand with the bike on a stand. As you can imagine, after supporting the rear wheel, it's harder to turn it... https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-E..._0231_edit.jpg Barkbusters VPS: I'm happy with the looks, fit, (optical) quality and ease of installation. But it interfered with the lower broadest part of the windscreen on maximum steering angles :( So i thought about lifting the handlebars, so it wouldn't be a problem. I got some imitation Roxrisers, but after some measuring and testing, it didn't seem like the best solution for my riding position. So i decided to trim the screen. I used a paper and traced the edges of the screen. Then i marked the part to be cut of, and used this on both sides, so to get a symmetrical result. There's plenty of guides on youtube how to trim your windscreen, so i wont show you how i did it. I'm happy with the result. Only on close inspection, you can see that the screen has been slashed. I have full steering angle and the riding position isn't messed up I forgot to take a photo... Removing AIS piping: i had bought a blinding plate from OTR before. But there's little room for an Allen key to get the bolts out. Luckily i found a shortened Allen key in my Tenere toolkit. To get some more access, i removed the lower side panel and the exhaust header bolt. As you can see i had a silicon cap on the piping, but this a bit more nice & neat, and let's not forget the weight savings ;) The removed pipe: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-c...o/DSC_0257.JPG The remaining hole in the engine. I removed the exhaust header bolt on the other side. https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-P...o/DSC_0258.JPG the plate with the original gasket-kind-of-thingy https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-s...o/DSC_0260.JPG and the shortened Allen key https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-b...o/DSC_0261.JPG For some reason the setting on the speado healer got messed up. I looked up a manual online ( http://healtech-electronics.com/docs...rsGuide_en.pdf ), and it proved very easy to setup. I have the speedohealer tiewrapped to the post that used to hold the AIS valve. You can see a blue connector on the photo. I was going to ask on the forum what it is for. But while typing this post it dawned on me how silly of me.... Of course it is the connector for the AIS... https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-L...o/DSC_0262.JPG All that's left now is a proper dyno tune, which hopefully will be done Saturday |
And here some more info about getting my engine properly tuned:
A picture of my bike on the dyno: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-o...o/DSC_0244.JPG after two runs the conclusion was it was too lean. My setup is similar to Pleiades, so he was kind enough to share his tune. I compared both with Excel, see result below: https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-J...vsPleiades.png Map1 is Pleiades, Map2 is mine. Red means lower, blue higher value, compared to Map2. The values represent precentages of extra fuel by the PowerCommander. And Pleiades marked up the part of the tune that relates to useable parts of the table: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-t...o/IMG_0292.JPG So you can see, the tune i had on the bike has been tuned for a big part in a not very usefull range... I didn't notice a difference while riding with the seat-of-the-pants dynoruns. At low throttle though, the engine runs a little snatchy. We'll see how that will turn out after the dyno tuning |
I just came back this weekend from an allroad ride in the Pyrinees, Andorra.
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Id...=w1680-h945-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/Hd...=w1680-h945-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/AS...=w1680-h945-no A couple of conclusions after my ride: - the engine is choppy and uncomfortable with touring at low revs, but standing up and riding with very low revs, the engine works just great! This was a surprise for me. In first gear the engine is a bit agressive on the gas and requires the clutch for better control. For longer highway rides i dont think the engine is that great. - It is very sturdy and crash resistant. I dropped it 3 times at low speeds. (almost) no damage to the bike, except for a bend brake pedal. For this i'll be mounting a brake snake. http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z...llyprep012.jpg - the bike can take a good beating, especially with the WP shock and fork. Even though i managed to bottom out the rear and front with a jump and big muddy pit. But that might be because the bike may be undersprung for my weight. The previous owners were smaller and lighter. - the standard plastic bash plate works really well. It took some beating with big rocks and also works supporting my bike with it's prop stand. I see no reason for changing it for an aluminum version. - My prop stand works perfectly. http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?t=24108 I had two flats: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/ps...s=w720-h405-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/0B...c=w522-h949-no - The s-moto tail tidy could use a more sturdy mounting of the rear light. Now it's only mounted at the top. It didnt break, but with the single engine shacking and the offroad bashing, i think it will only be a matter of time before it breaks/bends. I will email S-moto about this, i have a mod in mind. - Riding with 1.8 bar tire pressure is too little of you plan on drifting and tail braking into a corner.Standard tube will rip apart. Riding with 2.0 bar worked well, but i could feel a difference in handling and grip. - anakee 3 tires work very well on the asphalt and are ok on good gravel roads with small rocks. But the more rought roads or wet offroad it doesnt inspire confidence. - The headlight protector from OTR/PowerBronze is not suitable for offroad use. The velcro doesnt work well enough, i lost the protector :( - the standard indicators are not dustproof. They are now grey/brown on the insite - the rear break is a bit to agressive. Steel brake lines are out of the question. I'll check to see what kind of brake pads are on. I want organic, not sintered. - the red foam grips on my handlebars are too big, especially the middle part With the experience of this trip i have made the following list of modifications i will do before my next trip: - mount Heidenau K60 Scout tires - replace bend brake pedal and mount brake snake - find better headlight protector - mount extra LED flood lights for riding at night - brace rear light on s-moto tailtidy - mount waterpump protection (lower crash bars from Touratech or OTR waterpump guard) - mount different/smaller handlebar grips and perhaps: - pivot pegz. Makes riding standing up/shifting and braking easer - maintenance and new springs in my shock and forks. |
Great write up and photos, the bike is looking superb! Have enjoyed following it's progress, Steve
|
Good stuff! :023:
You can't beat a good shakedown test to find out what's good and what's not. Funny thing is, it's taken me nearly seven years of ownership to get the Ten sorted to my requirements and there are still one or two niggles to address. It's a long old (and expensive) process but well worth it. Keeps the interest up in the bike too - bike's that are perfect out the crate get boring very quickly! ;) |
The weekend before i left on my trip, i had my bike tuned.
I had a dyno run before with the tune that came with the bike. That proved to be way too lean. Pleiades was so kind to lend me his tune. I ended up making a hybrid tune of mine and his and returned to get the bike tuned. The hybrid was a lot better. In the end i paid just € 100 for the bike to get tuned, the tuner lend me his VStrom during the day so i could get on with my business. KMS in Poeldijk was the tuner. Below is the comparison of the new tune (left) with the hybrid (right) https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B3...WkU&authuser=0 https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/3R...=w1026-h663-no https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3A...ew?usp=sharing Also attached the PCV file: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3A...ew?usp=sharing The bike has been running great! |
I'm happy for you that your bike is all coming together for you. It's a great feeling achieving a well sorted bike to your own specific needs, which is what gets discovered by getting out there & using it. Great write up looks like a terrific ride.
I see your new list has Pivot Pegs. I fitted some to my Tenere & I really enjoy them for what I use the bike for 50% tar 50% Gravel/dirt/off road. Cheers. |
Got some more work done on the bike.
Here's a photo from my OTR foam filter after a week of riding in Andorra. Seemed to work perfectly. The inside of the airbox was very clean, no trace of dust. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/eb...=w1624-h913-no And here's a bracket from Adventure Spec, for mounting some LED spot/flood lights. I'm still undecided on which lights. There's multiple options for cheaper LED lights. As you can see there's a slight interference with the brake line and routing ring. I moved them down one hole on the triple clamp. All it needs now is a little trimming of the bracket and it's clear. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/dQ...=w1624-h913-no https://photos.google.com/album/AF1Q...xIH1hefD1BeI3z I mounted the OTR waterpump guard https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/dn...=w1624-h913-no I decided to go for a set of Pivot Pegz. Here's them mounted to the bike. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/cH...E=w701-h394-no Also in the photo: my new brake pedal. The old one has been twisted and bend on multiple places, and since the metal is thick, it will be difficult to restore. I'll look into that later when i feel like it. |
I also got a Motion Pro cable set to function as a brake snake. You'll get three cables in the set, which is nice.
But to mount it i need a drill bit of 2mm and a drill. My is currently lend out, so that will have to wait. I also went for a tool roll from Kriega and put most my tools. You can also spot my new tool/toy: Leatherman Surge, a gift for my birthday https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-g...=w1680-h808-no |
Another good chapter in your bike build...great stuff! . Think I'll treat myself to the pivot pegs soon. Steve
|
It's been a while. Have been busy lately and made no time for the bike.
But have done a few things now. I discovered the rear left indicator was melting away because of hot exhaust gas. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/ro...4=w514-h913-no I made an easy fix with some aluminum sheet: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/mH...=w1624-h913-no It's not the prettiest mod, but it'll have to do for now. I have a Smoto tail tidy on my Tenere. The tail light mounting is not very sturdy. It was just hanging from two top brackets. So it was able to flex. Not ideal with a single cylinder beast... I wrote Smoto about it, they said they're working on it, but haven't heard anything for the last few weeks. So i decided to make a fix myself. I braced the rear tail light by using two brackets for the bottom tail light mounts. https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/hZ...=w1624-h913-no Further i got two LED spot lights from Ebay. The mountings of the brackets didnt fit the lights, because the thread on the housing is f00ked. I emailed the seller, and he send me a replacement pronto. Unfortunately just one.... I did mount the lights and wiring. The lights are a bit loose, because of the faulty threading, but they can be swapped easily later on when i have a good pair! https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/N_...=w1624-h913-no Have ordered a set of K60 Scouts, with tubes. Also there some error with the goods. The rear tube is one size too big. Seller didn't respond at all to my emails. And still haven't received my Touratech bashplate. It's been couple of weeks now, and i enquired, but they turned silent. So all in all had some setbacks with my last internet orders :( To be continued.... |
For my upcoming trip i need to take some more gear, because i'm camping.
So i've been looking at soft luggage options. I decided to go for a Givi luggage rack. They're cheap and match the Trekker Outback cases, which i also like. This leaves the option for a later luggage expansion open. For soft luggage i looked at a couple of options: - The Wolfman Dry saddlebags i had before. http://wolfmanluggage.com/products/e...ry-saddle-bags They werent bad, but the way they hang outwards on the bike. Also they came apart, during my trip, but were still useable. Aftersales was good, they send me a new pair straight away. - SW-Motech dakar http://shop.sw-motech.com/en/by+prod...+Set/index.htm not waterproof, comes with racks, but racks can only be used for saddlebags i've seen some reports where the quality wasn't all that - Enduristan smaller, less known brand, was my second choice https://shop.enduristan.com/eu/produ...95a1710de1687c - Giant loop Great basin i found too expensive, and also used too much of the space on the rear, leaving little room for a tent and mattress and such I decided to go for the underdog. So i ended up with a less known option from ATG (all terrain gear). ATG is a South African company which has some very clever camping gear. I know them from a previous trip in Africa, where i used their compact camping bed. http://www.atgear.co.za/8-52-large_d...mp-sleeper.jpg You can find this design in Europe also, but the price is twice as high. The quality was very good. I had no problems with it whatsoever. For the soft luggage i decided to go for the less known ATG Overland Saddlebags http://www.atgear.co.za/atg-multi-ac...ddle-bags.html http://www.pikipiki.co.za/wp-content...98-400x352.jpg I've been following some epic ride reports, which featured one of the guys working at (founder of?) ATG. - tested in some epic ride's in Africa, so they have streetcred (check them excellent ride reports, they're on the product page, see link above!) - The bags are waterproof - innerbags can be taken out, so the saddlebags can stay on the bike - the bags are slimmer then most other options. - good mounting, where the bags don't hang outwards - they are preshaped, by a plastic mold in the bottom - at $ 275 including shipping to Europe, the price point cant be beat! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jtVW6OWeies Today i picked them up at the post office. Quality looks very good. |
Very good report on your mods and farkles. I've enjoyed following it.
Doing a 4 day trip end of the month and shall make use of some of your tips and mods. Thanks for sharing. |
Unfortunately my last trip was cancelled due to a bicycle accident i had.
But i've been planning a new trip, touring Morocco. Meanwhile i've done some minor farkles and one big: A new custom saddle made by Rayz. He is a seat artist and does just custom jobs and requires your bike to shape the seat. http://www.rayz.nl/en/ https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/kX...=w1631-h917-no https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/YJ...=w1631-h917-no I chose this one above the Kahedo/Touratech, because i didnt want a 4cm raise of seat height. Now it's approx 2cm. For maneuvering the bike when seated it's a bit harder now, and i'm no short person (1.90m). Other mods are: - removed the spindle/bobbins on the front axle. I recon they dont do much in the terrain besides getting stuck behind something. - shortened the oil overflow hose, so it wont get stuck or smashed in the rough stuff - ordered a new yoke nut. On my bike is a custom one which requires a special tool i don't have. So i ordered a Pro Bolt nut. - i put on the standard grey colored fairing pieces. I was able to get a set for little money. Mine were painted white, but i like the grey better. Also i've been looking into mounting a chain guide, but i don't have the tools or skills to make a metal bracket for one, so unfortunately that will have to wait. But i definitely want one |
You could kick back with some popcorn & enjoy a movie in that seat by the looks.
It's always a bit of a dilemma with the plastics. I keep thinking it would be nice to paint mine in, I have big ideas, but small windows of opportunity to fulfill them. So I've been thinking of maybe going the other way & getting later model plastics that are black, a bit like JaumeV's? Really enjoying this thread though Darkhelmet, I hope Morocco goes well for you. |

Really enjoying this thread. Bike looks great now. A very quick and effective cure for the choppiness at small throttle openings is the throttle grip mod by Bilgebay shown some years ago. I did it to my XTZ last night, went for a spin and it's like a new bike. The mod is on the main mod list now. SEARCH. It's a 20 min job.
