Upgrades
I'm seriously thinking about so pending some money one my Tenere to make it very nice indeed.
I've got the kev mods and DNA filters done..also got the cat out of my can. But now I'm looking at suspension. I know about changing the springs but I might want more. The reason for this is I was thinking of selling my Tenere but every time I ride it I fall in love all over again. So what are the best forks I can get...and what is the best rear shock I can get for my money. I want options please. Mike |
Interesting!!!!
I like the question, iam also interested in this, all the mods done now on my Ted and the bike is brilliant, a totally different animal, can it be made better???.

Forks
The world your oyster! You can spend a small fortune on a brand new WP setup from OTR in Germany if you feel flush. Alternatively, buy their yokes and fit a secondhand set of KTM forks from ebay. You could also go for a used set of forks from a WR, YZ, CR, KLX etc. They can (and have) all be made to fit the XTZ. Plenty to read on the forum regarding these conversions - have a play with the search tool. Change the springs and oil - cheap option and does make quite a bit of difference. Choose progressive of linear. From personal experience having tried both Hyperpro progressive and Ohlins linear, I prefer the linear option, but everyone's different. Springs are available from Hyperpro/Yacugar, Wirth/Hagon, Ohlins and Wilbers. Get a re-valve, or fit cartridge emulators (in addition to springs) - more money than the above, but not as much as a fork swap. There's not a lot available "off the shelf" for the Z, so a bit of creativity, machining and fabrication time would open up more options. Shock Plenty of choice, again linear or progressive, from Ohlins, Nitron, Hyperpro/Yacugar and Wilbers. Prices range from about 350 up to 850 depending on spec. However, even the cheaper ones are an unbelievable improvement on the stock Sachs shock. Personally I went for the cheaper end with the Hyperpro/Yacuger option. Had it for nearly three years now and its seen plenty of action and its still as good as it was when it was first installed. But like I said, you'll only hear positive things from everyone/anyone who has fitted an aftermarket shock - they'll all drastically improve your ride. |
CR250 forks are all but a bolt in fit... use the same bottom bearing as the XT..
top bearing can be bought of the shelf... Makeing steering stops are also dead esy , then just drill 2 holes in the lower yoke to bolt them on.... The only thing to keep in mined MX forks have 300mm of travel but the XT only has around 200mm of ground clearance... I had mine revalved / travel reduced to 240mm.... required bearings... Top.... 32906 , 30mm/47mm/12mm Bottom... 32006 , 30mm/55mm/17mm |
Personally as a total non expert, and having found out that suspension is an art, I would go and visit an expert and chat and get their advise. I would stick to the Ohlins/WP brands as both are very good as well as well known and so you can always get bits. Have fun!!!!

Honda CR250 Showa USD forks / complete front end from a dimantaled 03 bike.. |
Google is your best friend in this case: just type suspension specialist in your area and it should come up with several possibilities. Then take up contact with some of your choice and you have a start already.
In my opinion simply to buy a shock from OTR is not the right choice, because suspension should always be adjusted to the bike and rider, and the plans you have. It is never a standard solution. Just had a WP 4860 fork mounted in mine, using the tri-clamps of a KTM SX250F. Needed a tiny bit of modification, but not much really. The steering-lock is not operational anymore, but i never used that anyway. Now to do is to get it to a specialist for the correct adjustments, and for checking if limiting the travel is needed or not. And then a new hlins shock will also be made.

So apart from buying a different top bearing, they fit straight in?? Did you use the yokes too? |
