XTX retro/classic scrambler project.

Hi all, ive had my XTX for a few years now and have even taken it to Italy and back. For the money I really dont think you can beat the bike but there lies the double edged sward. Part exchange values are very low. I have been considering part exchanging my XTX for a Triumph Scrambler. I know its not a proper off roader but I like the style of old scramblers, Triumph have just mixed this with modern day reliability and practicality. But ive also always wanted to do my own custom bike and since my XTX is such a good, clean reliable example with extras like the 2 into 1 wrap around exhaust ive been considering the idea of customizing it in the style of the old scramblers. Although im still undecided the rough plan is this:

Take off all the plastics
Replace the headlight with a 20cm round off road light
Chop the tail off the frame and all redundant brakcets.
Remove the airbox and fit open filter
Fit power commander to correct fueling
Low custom made seat
Raising rear suspension by 20mm or so.

May be fit TKC 80's as you can now get a 17 front in them.

Ive already stripped it and done a very rough Microsoft Paint drawing showing the idea. Its very rough but it shows what im aiming for.

Like the idea,...thats a seriously wide looking back wheel !! must be just the angle the pic is taken :icon_bounce: like the look of those tyres.

eden 11-02-13 15:07

Ye its the picture angle, standard size rear wheel with Distanza tires. I think modern bikes hide all their engineering and its a big shame. I like to see how they are made and how they work. I'm still not 100% if i will go through with it. Once i cut that tail im committed :-) Need to check the left hand side and see if the voltage regulator and the ECU can be moved without altering the cabling. The idea is to make a slim box under the full length of the seat. Where the battery sits now and where the snorkel used to be. In this box i plane to put all the plugs and the ECU to hide them. Will put the voltage regulator some place it can get fresh air. I don't plan to do any messing around with the wiring harness. I think a stripped XTX will look the biz but more than that be a little different while staying practical and usable. We will see.

Landton 11-02-13 15:58

Yes I like the idea, the XT are so cheap here in sweden most folks only want KTM! :) If I could afford I would like to buy another XT jsu to do a cafe racer with it. Saw someone but a Ducati monster plastic on a XT but he sold it before he finished. But if I would built one I prefer the 2-2 system like.

Look at this bike but it,s a TRX850 but how I want my bike, not me building the bike!

But this is really cool bike!

I would fit a flat track rear seat /mudguard .:smilies0243:

SimonRoma 11-02-13 17:54

Seriously good looking bike wowowowow

CaptMoto 11-02-13 19:25

Well for years I have been fancying a bike which I have never seen in the flesh, called the Derbi Mulhacen, it's a very well designed Cafe' Racer that interestingly enough has got the exact same engine as the XT's 660!

Here is a pic and a link to their webisite http://www.derbi.com/int/index.php?o...126&Itemid=288

DaleC 11-02-13 19:28

Digging the concept!! :icon_thumright:

I have a Honda Dominator (NX650) in Oz and am amazed at the effort that some tuners have exercised over these bikes to make them unrecognisable from their former lives. For example:
http://www.bikeexif.com/honda-nx650

Google "NX650 Flat Tracker" and you will get loads of ideas along the lines of what you are thinking.

There was a build on Advrider, unfortunately, I can't access that site from work to give you the link :(

eden 11-02-13 21:43

There is one of those Derbi's for sale in Fowlers in Bristol. Was looking at it a few weeks ago. I've ridden a few other standard bikes with the 660 motor and I'm amazed how slow and bunged up they feel compared to mine with the after market exhaust and filter.
I stripped the bike more this evening. The more I strip it the more I can see the bike I'm trying to find. Its there its just hidden by loads of usless metal and plastics. I will make the final call this weekend once I've had time to strip it of everything I don't need. I can see a few problems but hey that's part of the fun.........
**** it, I'm cutting it Friday evening. In for a penny in for a pound :-o

eden 14-02-13 16:35

Ive got the bike stripped almost to the point of cutting now. Air box out and all the electrical cables released from their various mountings and zip ties. I took out the air box and sat there thinking about what to do. The frame looks fantastic all open but i do have a few concerns about using direct cone filters. First off practicality in the UK as its always wet and i want the bike to be usable, mounting everything will take some fabrication but more than that i know some **** will nick em when the bike is parked up. For that reason im going to try something a little different. Im going to keep the air box but heavily mod it. This will allow me to put all the cables, ECU, and the power commander on top of it out of the way. I will post pics of the planned mod.
Ordered a load of parts and some service stuff this afternoon. Filters, tyres, power commander all on their way. Im now looking for a large single round head light to set the bike off. Really want one of these but im not sure if they are road legal

Mort 14-02-13 17:23

Yes dogs do daas that light rocks. No front mud gaurd through.bigwink

Black Dog 14-02-13 18:20

Not sure if this will help, but there is a lot of discussion over at the Triumph Rat forum ( www.triumphrat.net) about ARKs - airbox removal kits. The idea is to replace the airbox with an alloy fabrication which allows retention of all the relays and connectors which rely on the airbox structure, and yet make room for pod filters and so on. There are a few made commercially, and many members have made their own. Very popular with the retro Bonneville lot. If you search the forum for 'airbox removal kit' you will get a lot of info, which may be some help in building your own.

Also, people there seem happy with 'socks' that go over the pod filters to keep the weather out. I have no experience of any of this, just passing on something I have seen.

eden 15-02-13 20:35

Cheers for all your help guys. Since this is my first project ive descided to do it a little at a timer rather than try to do it all in one go. Small steps and all that. Ive had some nice toys in the post, Power commander, DNA stage 2 and a set of TKC 80's and they look the dogs! Ive also just ordered that head light i put a link up for in a previous post. I think the bike is going to have an end of the days/mad max look to it! Will post pics as it progresses.

Mort 15-02-13 21:22

eden yes one step at a time, look at retro bikes how much was the headlight.?:happy7:

john t 17-02-13 18:39

eden 17-02-13 20:27

John, won't be doing anything with the forks.

Mort, the light is due to be here Thursday! Its not cheep but not to expensive either, about 250 delivered to the UK.

Fitted the stage 2 DNA and power commander today. Loaded the closest map I could find and there is noticeable more pull in the mid to top range. I have another map I may try to see if there is any difference. Will get the TKC's fitted this weekend and may fit the light if I have time. Will need to make a mount for the clocks as that frame will go with the factory light unit.

Mort 17-02-13 20:47

Not to expensify then, but i wouldn't wont to brake it.:team[1]:

eden 22-02-13 20:03

Looking good so far:

now that is class looking

eden 21-03-13 19:36

http://i369.photobucket.com/albums/o...eedfly/1-1.jpg

Gave my spare tank over to a local custom trike builders last week. They are welding in shaped metal panels to fill a few bits on the tank so it looked like it was always meant to be on show and not hidden by the seat and plastics. Will show some pics when i get it back.

eden 24-04-13 14:00

Finally have the tank fitted. The tank had plates welded over the recess for the seat and the top brackets for the side plastics. It was then prepped and painted. Still a list of things left to do. Clean and paint the radiator and coolant header tank, Fabricate alloy side plates to cover the relays, make seat pan and have it covered, shorten the exhaust and chop the tail down. Ive been staring at the bike trying to figure out where to chop it? Think i have it figures out. Does anyone know what the paint code is for the frame?

Chris1811 24-04-13 14:07

This looks awesome! Real nice idea.........now bring it to the lakes meet and test it out :p

eden 24-04-13 14:49

Love the idea of that. Im no off roader though, only ever pottered around on gravel tracks and the like, nothing serious. Ive taken that bike to Italy in its original form and it was great. I still want it to be usable once im done so am deliberately keeping the exhaust mount brackets as big as they are. Gonna make a frame that can bolt on/off so i can still use a tail rack or top box but will also triple up for a pillion seat for short trips. Should look good once its finished. Will keep posting pics as it develops.

Pleiades 24-04-13 21:46

Looking mighty fine - It's really starting to take shape. I like it!

Is there any space to relocate the expansion tank under the seat unit, as it looks a bit out of place on such an uncluttered, back to basics style bike?

Mort 24-04-13 22:10

Looking good fork gaiters though, loose the front guard fit a alloy water bottle for expansion tank.I think poss Triumph Bonneville seat and alloy rear mud guard.:smilies0134:

Chris1811 24-04-13 23:03

Matey all the lakes trails I beleive will be suitable for even road tyres. The odd few which arent have roads around them but tbh we have had guys on full Xs on road tyres come with us with no problems.

If you do fancy coming drop gas_up_lets_go a PM he is the main organiser. At the endnof the day you can do as much or as little as you want :)

Anyway ill stop clogging up your thread. Bike looks sick and very much looking forward to watching this one!

eden 09-05-13 18:05

OK progress so far. Bit the bullet and cut the frame! Shortened the end can as well. Not a large increase in noise but with the power commander running a high fuel map to go with the DNA stage 1&2 it does pop flames on the overrun i noticed! :067:
I played around with the standard seat, chopped and lowered it so i can at least use the bike now which is great. Next up is to make a new flat seat pan that follows the straight horizontal back bone of the bike. All progress and looking more chunky and mean each day!!

i like it!

Slinky 11-05-13 05:07

As do I! Great project mate, I think it'll look great once finished, it's looking good now. Will be interesting how it feels to ride though with the ergonomics changed.

Mort 11-05-13 08:36

Yes and no.Not quiet the right look yet.:seasaw:

eden 13-05-13 22:50

Fun test ride. Forgot to tighten up the number plate. While out i heard a big bang and felt a thump. Pulled over and realized my plate had gone :-) Found it up the road and have taped it up for now. New one ordered. Last big job to do it the side panels to cover the wiring and then its lots of small details to address.

are those knoberlies on a xtx front wheel? :)

eden 16-07-13 15:14

Ye, TKC 80's and they come in a front 17". Gone are the days of fitting a rear to the front :-) When i bought them i worried they may cause vibrations or feel dodgy on the road but they cause neither. Comfortable at all speeds and they have plenty grip on road. I dont think they will last long though, very soft rubber.

They go right on with no mods and no rubbing. Used standard size tubes. I emailed the manufacturers regarding the rear as they don't make a 160/60-17 but they said the 150/70-17 would be fine and it is. The front runs the standard 120/70-17.

cheers for you're come back ive just been in touch with a friend who crashed his bike (xt660x)and wheels are still fine. so i might be buying both his wheels of him for 200 then i can just get some of these tyres fitted on them and then swapp them out whenever required e.g light green laning or winter snow . thanks again , ash
