Ten front forks

Hi Guys/Girls:glasses12:

Ive got a bit of a project possibly in the back of my mind and am wondering if anyone has ever had to replace there complete front forks including yokes, wheel, etc etc.

Where did you get the replacement forks?

How much where they?

How long did it take you to source these?

Basically looking at possibly getting a bike where by i want it to have a 21 inch front wheel and im pretty sure the front forks will not allow it to have a 21 inch front wheel but also looking for dual discs (so most ktm forks are out) and something that can take the weight of a 600cc engine and used for off road. The only other option ive got is the likes of an off road bikes forks and wheel have have to live with the single disc

Yes, see my "Commuter, Adventurer, Racer" thread, although it's probably not what you were looking for, as I used KTM forks with a single disc.

All my bits, apart from the yokes, came via eBay. Whole lot probably cost me ~1200, but over half of that was buying the yokes from Off-The-Road.

Of course if you want dual discs, a 21" front wheel, and capable of supporting a 600cc bike off-road, then you could do a lot worse than a pair of stock Tenere forks. I might just happen to have most of a stock Tenere front end lying around the garage.

I certainly don't want to undermine the chance of Uberthumper making a sale, but for info - the KTM 950/990 and the later versions of the 640 Adventure all had twin front discs on WP forks... I'm not sure if they are handed or simply two left legs in essence, with the correct front wheel/hub to take twin discs...

That could be an option too?

Well as some of you know ive the Tiger 1050 which is cracker but just dont use it enough and im still young so will make me loose my license (way too easy to speed, wheelie, slid into a corner:icon_cheers:). And no Fiddich im not doing to cut and shunt the tiger!!! well not yet anyway

So ive a few different options in my head as to what bike to get that will allow me to not get done but also allow me to off road on. If the Tenere ride with Fiddich's bike doesnt stir my tea right my next option is

Buy an older version Suzuki DL650

Remove the front fairing (and sell to make some money)

put on a high front mudguard (sell orginal to make money)

Make some form of braket for the clocks

make or clamp on some form of large single head light on.

then finally attach some form of screen on for protection

Now as im looking to keep the bike for a while and to use mostly for road riding but also off roading i will soon find out if i like the 19inch front wheel or not (test rode both old and new versions, didnt have any issues with feel but as for off roading now sure what its like). Anyway if i dont like the 19inch front which ive heard quiet alot of people dont is looking at the option of a 21 inch front and the easiest option is to get a complete front forks and wheel rather than try to find a wheel that will fit into the dl650s forks.

The reason i want dual discs (if its not too hard) is that the bike would still be used for touring and the DL650 is a big old girl.

Options so far are

Tenere 660 front

KTM 950/990 front

KTM 640 adveturer 640 front

DR650 front (single disc but suppose to not be so hard to change over!!! they say)

Let the abuse begin:mblah05:

Why not buy a Transalp instead?

JMo 01-07-12 13:31

I agree with Singleminded - the Transalp would be a better option - the DL650 just won't cut it [off road], and while it might be a fun project, the end result is going to look pretty home-made unless you are a wizz with bodywork...

If the older 650 (or even current 700) Transalp doesn't do it for you, how about something like a Honda Dominator, or even a Kawasaki KLR650...

But ultimately, the current XT660Z Tenere really is the best of that class of bike for refinement vs. genuine off-road ability... hopefully Fiddich can convince you!
