firstly i agree the matierial source time and equipment needed to make somthing like that is worth a lot ....
and its a real credit to you for doing it ..if econinmy of scale worked out under a tenner im sure people would buy them
but i understand that was not your objective ..no one seems to value your time ..which at modests rates is a lot of money ....per hour
i would love a lathe ..

when i got me first bench grinder all me chisels ended up about i inch long ..anyway

im just pitching in with what i did with the skinny bar

one of these ...

some halfords car mat and two tiny cable ties ..

its held firm and is good for the job on rough ground .. gets a real good grip doesnt slip or virate loose ..gives a staedy screen .....
its been fine ..no complaints at all

.....or alternatively ditch that as anyboby knows to clamp onto a cylindrical object required a lot of force or enough to distort the cylinder so no rotation is there....

and then the ram mouint can be used for another wing mirror for trail riding. Unscrew standard mirrors and use this instead.............

thats a neat set up too..
it depends on the cradle you use i suppose and if on a single bike with a hard wired cradle its a real neat idea ..although to be honest im not that keen on the drilling bit .. you could fit a ball by doing that easy enough
a kink ...maby.. one things for sure it aint movin ...kink ? or hole personal choice

my set up is for a nuvi 550 i didnt want a fixed cradle
the great feature of this sat nav is that it can be moved to a different bike which is what i needed
ten seconds to swap without the need for a expensive cradle

which i have to quite often
so the simple 10 quid ball set up suits me a lot better

,..ive never needed to wire it hard as it will charge or work direct off the power socket if needed
but has has a usful battery life of 6 hours which for most days is fine
i rarely plug it in..

trusty vee strom this is me work bike and its never missed a beat in 52k http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/9451/img0814m.jpg

me vara is mrs minkys luxery tourer ..its me 2nd i love the softess of this bike ..as a long legged tourer its fantastic its underestamated ..efforless unstressed cruising two up ..like sittin in me front room ..
600 miles to go and pissing down theres not many other other bikes id rather be on ..

Great input but one advantage of the split collar is to avoid causing a kink and transfer torque applied into clamp load. the friction caused by the split collar is exponentially greater than that of the bare unbolt which is transferring clamp load onto a single point on a radius. You can guess the rest.

the coller is best i agree
from what i can see the ram thing grips at four diagonal points
as a result of this thread ive took the ram thing off to check and the tube is absalutly fine ..un marked

i see now the link wasnt clear at all im sorry
i referted to it and failed to notice it lacks the bottom coller

this is the fitting as is
the above link may clear up the confusion ive caused
it really does grip well

Considering the expense in purchasing a TT Rider or Zumo - and the fact I already own a TT Europe for the car...I just purchased one of these. It's not bluetooth but if it works I'll be happy

it looks good for the job
pleanty of people use a tankbag window and clingfilm and get on ok

seems like a good buy like the next step up

while were on the subject

the 550 is halfway house about 230 quid but it has been great
totally weather proof and reliable
such a good battery life too
i teach new riders and it has 24 test routes in it so its been used alot in the last 18 months in all weather ..
touchwood its stood up to it all i cant fault it ..

That looks pretty neat and not a bad price either. Would also be good for mobile phones - eg Google Maps etc on iPhones/Androids
