nice job!, certainly better than the crappy plastic thing you get with the ram mount setup

very good idea.
do you have any problems with bad vibrations. need to mount a 60csx and was going to use the TT version but this would save heaps of cash. PM me about the screen thingy would really be keen to try out. was that an idea from another thread i wonder........ |
Thanx chaps,
No vibration, its solid as a rock even with the big Zumo 660 hanging of it. |
What would you estimate the price to? :)

Because of the comment below, these are not for sale here. I can do without crap like that. |
25 for 5 mins of metal work... you could make some money there, just make sure youre punters are deaf dumb and blind.

5 mins of metalwork? is that where you make total tat out of old jerry cans? Must look great |
Quote:
I was refering to the fact that a small piece of ally isnt worth 25, a tenner maybe. and i never got round to making those. |
Quote:
I was offended, I will explain why as you have taken the trouble to explain your comments. The small piece of Aly is worth about 38 pence at todays prices, the process however is not 5 mins of metalwork. When something is made on a centre lathe and a milling machine there are costings to take into account. These include tooling, materials and time. lathes and milling machines are charged at a "rate" as well as these are never free (well, none of mine were anyway) Simply put, you can't sell something for the cost of its raw Mtls. The operations involved in that split collar include producing a Drg, turning OD, boring ID, machining chamfer on doth dias, parting off, machining chamfers on other side, milling slots using correct cutting oils then deburring. If I was in full scale production of a part like this, I would make it on a sliding head and sell for a tenner because production costs would be very much lower. I was not hoping to find blind, deaf and dumb punters for this. I was offering a bespoke solution to a mounting issue for those that could appreciate the process and the benefit that such an item could bring. Your comments have made me think that I was perhaps a little too free in offering this service to a forum. No hard feelings mate, end of the matter please. Al. |
excuse my ignorance...but can I see a pic of the finished article on its own.?
I don't know what this is all about. Will it fit my Snooper Sat Nav Indago.? |

It's a split collar. It changes your top bar to 22mm for any clamping device, it's nothing specific to any particular sat nav. I made it to allow proper mounting of the ram clamp that came with the 660. Can hold the ram mount and shake the bike about with it now, this wont move "when clamped in position with the ram clamp of course" Al. |
oh ok...what is the OD of the Tenere top bar then?

Ilkleyal has gone through the trouble of making a bespoke part to fit a very real problem, if you don't like it, or think its too expensive then it is less effort on your part to say nothing. If you think you can produce the collar for less, then please go ahead, nothing wrong with a free market. The cost is the cost, if you don't like it don't buy it! |
Sorry guys
To clear the point up it was me that said "I can do without crap like that". I was speaking of comments made ref the possible supply of these things and I accept that in this case it looks like I was quoting someone. I was not quoting, I was annoyed and I apologise for the above confusion. Al. |

It's 12.7 on mine which is approximate half inch

I would go with Al's assessment, it's been almost two years since I measured mine!

For a minute then I thought I had loged on to ukgser by mistake :smilielol:

..... or heaven forbid advrider......

firstly i agree the matierial source time and equipment needed to make somthing like that is worth a lot ....
and its a real credit to you for doing it ..if econinmy of scale worked out under a tenner im sure people would buy them but i understand that was not your objective ..no one seems to value your time ..which at modests rates is a lot of money ....per hour i would love a lathe .. when i got me first bench grinder all me chisels ended up about i inch long ..anyway im just pitching in with what i did with the skinny bar one of these ... http://www.adventure-spec.com/shop/r...l/prod_48.html some halfords car mat and two tiny cable ties .. its held firm and is good for the job on rough ground .. gets a real good grip doesnt slip or virate loose ..gives a staedy screen ..... its been fine ..no complaints at all http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/9200/img1642du.jpg By minkyhead at 2011-02-07 http://img577.imageshack.us/img577/3395/satnav.jpg By minkyhead at 2011-02-07 |
well done mate, that's what a forum is all about.
Good on ya. Al. |
.....or alternatively ditch that as anyboby knows to clamp onto a cylindrical object required a lot of force or enough to distort the cylinder so no rotation is there....
http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/a...c/DSCF0378.jpg http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/a...c/DSCF0384.jpg http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/a...c/DSCF0385.jpg and then the ram mouint can be used for another wing mirror for trail riding. Unscrew standard mirrors and use this instead............. http://i995.photobucket.com/albums/a...c/DSCF0372.jpg |
thats a neat set up too..
it depends on the cradle you use i suppose and if on a single bike with a hard wired cradle its a real neat idea ..although to be honest im not that keen on the drilling bit .. you could fit a ball by doing that easy enough a kink ...maby.. one things for sure it aint movin ...kink ? or hole personal choice my set up is for a nuvi 550 i didnt want a fixed cradle the great feature of this sat nav is that it can be moved to a different bike which is what i needed ten seconds to swap without the need for a expensive cradle which i have to quite often so the simple 10 quid ball set up suits me a lot better ,..ive never needed to wire it hard as it will charge or work direct off the power socket if needed but has has a usful battery life of 6 hours which for most days is fine i rarely plug it in.. trusty vee strom this is me work bike and its never missed a beat in 52k http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/9451/img0814m.jpg By null at 2010-02-07 me vara is mrs minkys luxery tourer ..its me 2nd i love the softess of this bike ..as a long legged tourer its fantastic its underestamated ..efforless unstressed cruising two up ..like sittin in me front room .. 600 miles to go and pissing down theres not many other other bikes id rather be on .. http://img837.imageshack.us/img837/1829/gatedq.jpg By null at 2010-11-07 |
Great input but one advantage of the split collar is to avoid causing a kink and transfer torque applied into clamp load. the friction caused by the split collar is exponentially greater than that of the bare unbolt which is transferring clamp load onto a single point on a radius. You can guess the rest.

from what i can see the ram thing grips at four diagonal points as a result of this thread ive took the ram thing off to check and the tube is absalutly fine ..un marked i see now the link wasnt clear at all im sorry i referted to it and failed to notice it lacks the bottom coller http://www.adventure-spec.com/shop/r.../prod_228.html this is the fitting as is the above link may clear up the confusion ive caused it really does grip well http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/7200/rap319.jpg By minkyhead at 2011-02-08 http://img228.imageshack.us/img228/8404/img14450.jpg By minkyhead at 2010-11-25 |
Considering the expense in purchasing a TT Rider or Zumo - and the fact I already own a TT Europe for the car...I just purchased one of these. It's not bluetooth but if it works I'll be happy

Fitted the new satnav waterproof bag and a 12V outlet today
http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p...7/P1000771.jpg Quite happy with it, may fiddle a bit so the ram mount points up and takes out some of the shake http://i127.photobucket.com/albums/p...7/P1000772.jpg 12V outlet came from accumate (Model TM78). Plugs straight in to the accumate charging lead already fitted to the battery - can be swopped over easy by removing the seat. I put the small Kriega bag on the bars to tidy the excess satnav lead - Total cost was less than 30 :icon_thumleft: |
