Tenere Adventure Preparation

Hello again everybody!!

As I'm preparing for a long journey throughout Europe and Africa I thought I should share some pics with my mod to the Tenere as I'm taking them.
Before I start I would like to thank everybody who contributed with precious info on this forum, especially all the admins. Things are much easier when you have all necessary info put together in one awesome place.

My first mod was the elimination of the snorkel (and setting the idle to ~1500rpm) mod I have done in the second day after I got back with the bike from Germany. Even without any fuel mod I can say that the tenere runs much better without it. I improvised a gasket from an car shaft boot that I had laying in the garage. It's temporary thing till I'll get the Unifilter foam thing. I also fitted a NGK CR7EIX Iridium Spark plug.

Everything in place

http://noystudio.com/pics/xt660dotcom/snorkel-4.jpg

Next I bought all the necessary parts and I built a Kev mod following Kev's guidelines (big thanks KEV!!!) and after servicing the bike at Yamaha dealer I installed it and set it at 3o'clock. WOW!!! This is one completely new bike. The bike pulls so nice now from 3000rpm all the way to 7000. No more heavy vibrations between 2500 and 4000. Those two mods I would recommend them to everybody riding an XT. They will completely improve your bike.

Next Mod: KTM plastic handguards. After waiting more than a week as the Bucharest KTM dealer haven't had them on stock (how stupid is that!!!) I finally bought them and installed them on the bike. At first I install them without the crossbar (a little more vibey without it) but after a few days I managed to squeeze the crossbar back in. The only thing I had to change in order to make them fit was the clutch lever (I had to chop 1,5 cm of it). They fit really nice, are cheap (~50E) and look pretty sturdy. I forgot to mention that I kept the bar ends. I think it gets pretty vibey without them.

What you get in the package

Next Mod: Cheap Ebay Footpegs. Nice mod, nice quality for the buck. Larger than OEM.

Will continue..........

Exhaust Mokup

While installing the KEVMOD and removing the snorkel I started to play with my Leo Vince SBK Exhaust which I kept from my prev bike (Hornet 07). I'm lookin for a second one on the internet (as I think it looks better w. 2 cans and also will be quieter).

Can anyone please help me w. a pic of the original Leo vince removable baffle? as the Hornet one I guess is different. THX!

Nice thread,,keep it coming.
cheers

Kev 27-05-10 05:15

Looking good mate.

mrwhite 27-05-10 08:54

Thanks!!!

Next Mod: Cush drive mod. After having a second flat in I guess 2 weeks, I had the chance to inspect the rubbers and they were pretty worn (almost 8000km). I used 2 patches of bicycle tube (~1,5 - 2mm thick) as with 3 I couldn't squeeze the sprocket back in. Nice mod... now they will last a long time for sure. No pics there as I also cleaned my chain which is a pretty dirty job so no hands for the camera.

jiauka 27-05-10 09:21

Nice!!!!!

Check the air breather box, the 2008 model has problems.
BTW, how did you magae to get that plate number, I LOVE IT!!!!

have fun,

j.

mrwhite 27-05-10 09:39

The breather has been changed w. the new one under warranty by the prev. owner so no problems there.

hehe I love it too. In fact I was pretty lucky as for no more than 6 mo. 3 digits license plates are available. This is available only in Bucharest (capital city). The preferential LP are really cheap in RO... only 10E extra.

Cheers,

Hi John. Great to see that you're enjoying the bike, both on/off road and 'in the garage' doing the mods. I hope that you'll continue to post as things develop - and when you do the trip of course - so that we can, in a way, make the journey with you. It's most interesting and the pictures are a great help.
With respect and admiration, Mike

enduro374 27-05-10 11:18

That single pipe looks just right - can you get a link pipe fabricated?

Keep the pic's coming..

What about luggage and perhaps a scottoiler?

Happy Riding

Hi Mike!! This thread is just the beginning and for sure there is a lot more to come. I really enjoy the bike. Hope you, your wife and the dogs are well and the tours are packed. Thanks for the nice words!!

First I'll try to fetch a second can from ebay and then I'll have a "Y" pipe fabricated (so I'll have a Leo Vince Tenere Exhaust with SBK GP replica not with SBK Ovale). If I don't get the second can I'll have a straight link pipe w. a sigle can ( the problem is that I already tried the can directly on the bike (without link pipe) and is on the very loud side :) even with baffles on so that's why I'm lookin for the second one).

AGAIN IF SOMEONE CAN HELP ME WITH A PICTURE OF A REMOVED LEO VINCE BAFFLE I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE IT !!!!!

For luggage I'm in the process of buying 3 Alutech Cases (2X41l and 1X47l or 29l still thinking about this one) form Ebay at a really good price see link
http://cgi.ebay.de/Aluminiumkiste-Mo...item563a9f39fb They emailed me back with a 235E offer for the 3 cases and 3 locks without VAT pp. included which I think is a really good deal. Then I'll have the rack fabricated.
Definitely I'll have some chain oiler.
I'm not in a really big hurry... the deadline is the end of July so plenty of time for all the mods.
I'll keep you guys posted.

Cheers,

Hello there, I bought mine from here: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/90-05-Yamaha-Y...item53e1c07e2e

There's a thread about the pegs here on the forum: http://www.xt660.com/showthread.php?...cheap+footpegs

You'll have to drill a 2mm hole in one in order to fit the OEM spring but no problem there I believe. They worth every penny.

Lairyboy 08-06-10 11:14

Thanks for the link, much appreciated!

I just received the second Leo Vince can which I bought from ebay :blob3: so the exhaust project will be finished soon.

I also ordered some other parts and I'm waiting for them. I'll be back with pics soon.

Well, the reason they didn't had it on stock might have been I bought the last set if you're talking about Dementor :P... 1 week ain't that bad either. I had to wait 3 wks for a central stand from Yamaha

Yeah from Dementor...
It's crazy that you waited 3 wks for the center stand since I ordered the clutch lever holder which I broke (I have strong hands :) and that costed me 20 freakin euros for a piece of alu) and it arrived in 1 week. Have you ordered yours from Dual tours or from Yamaha dealership?
Btw. can I take a look at your stand and take some measures since I want to have one made? I'd really appreciate it.

Cheers,

mrwhite 19-06-10 10:36

Next Mod: Puig Wind shield. Nice mod since with the OEM one I was getting some strong buffets (I'm 1,85m tall). The puig ws is about 8cm taller than the OEM one and it comes in different colours. I bought mine light smoke cause I thought that the dark smoke one is to dark for night driving. Here's the link with the seller from ebay (fast dispatch, UPS shipping). I also changed the stupid OEM plastic screws with some allen black metal ones bought from local store. Is really stupid to fit plastic head screws to the ws as every time I wash the bike the ws has to come off to proper clean the area.

mrwhite 19-06-10 10:48

Next Mod: AIS blocked. I used a plastic dowel pin (not sure if it's the right translation since I used google translate on that) and a screw fitted from inside the airbox. Job done stops the popping (not completely since I fitted the Leo cans).

AIS Blocked

mrwhite 19-06-10 16:32

Next Mod: Leo Vince SBK GP-Style
Finally after getting the second can I went to a really nice guy who fitted them to my Tenere. He used 50mm ss for the "Y" connection pipe and also manufactured a new bracket, also ss. I love the job and the cans. They are on the loud side with baffles on and without them ... are mental. I think it has to do with the volume of the cans which is a lot smaller than the original leo ovals.

mrwhite 19-06-10 16:50

Next Mod: Unifilter foam filter
I replaced the stock paper filter with a Unifilter foam filter which I bought directly from Unifilter Australian website ( Unifilter) being cheaper than on the touratech website (pretty stupid). Because it has a prefilter (black foam part) it fits perfectly without the snorkel or any other mods (for example DNA stage 2 air intake).
I already ordered a DNA side filter which I intend to use only onroad and on light offroad (not very dusty situations). When thing will get very dusty I'll swap back to the plastic side panel. On the way is also the Kev's Stage 3 Fuel Mod which is designed to go with Stage 3 DNA side filter.

http://intotheworld.eu/xt660dotcom/unifilter-2.jpg

mrwhite 19-06-10 19:38

BTW I already ordered new rubber since the back is as you can all see pretty shaved so no comments there please :) The original Sirac lasted 9000 km (which is pretty good) and the front has a lot in it. I opted for knobbies as I want to get used to them a little bit before the big trip. Pirelli MT21 front with Mitas E09 on the rear.

Cheers,

Sorry to say this, but this is a very bad idea!!

That stupid OEM plastic screews are designed to broke in case of having a fall. If you put the metal ones and you suffer a fall, probably you will broke all the front part.

On the other hand I love all your other mods :occasion14:

This is a good point, and I know at least one member on here did have that happen - fortunately like you say, the plastic screws are sacrificial and there is no serious damage to either part...

That said, my own screen is held on with Dzus fasteners, and my bike hit the deck many times on the way to Dakar (and in the US with the stock screws) and it was never an issue... maybe I was just lucky?!

Why would you block the AIS?
I don't get the point of stopping the popping sound.

Does it give a better fuel=> mile ratio?

I must say you got a point there. Live and learn.... some say. But as JMo described is a matter of luck :)

If you are planning on setting the bike up using a dyno/Powercommander, then removing the AIS helps to give a more consistent reading... or something like that...

It's also a lot of clutter and pipework you don't need around the engine block x

In case you use the stock exhaust there's no point in doing that, but if you change the stock to after market one the popping become rifle shots as some described and it's pretty annoying to have a rifle shot every time you take your hand off the gas. It doesn't have anything to do with fuel consumption.

I see. Well then there's no point in blocking the AIS... :) :109:
BTW can U tell me what bore you have on your LV baffles? Thanks. As my cans are from a Hornet I want to know if they are the same bore w. baffles.

Cheers,

Loopydog 20-06-10 11:58

Awesome and inspirational John. It's going to be interesting to see what else you do. I hardly recognise the bike already! Are you keeping the 'Tuareg' bag, or are you modding that too! lol. Bloody architects, always changing things!!

rearviewmirror 20-06-10 13:28

Love the exhaust fabrication! Can you post a video, I really want to hear it. I'm thinking trying to have someone fabricate a single FMF Honda TRX 700 can to my XTR... Just have to sort out what to for a header.

mrwhite 20-06-10 17:48

Thanks guys!

No need to mod the Tuareg Mike, is perfect as it is. I have some other mods on the way soon.

I'll post a video in a few days. My DSLR is pretty old and it doesn't have video function but we're thinking on investing in a 2009-2010 model that has full HD features for the big adventure trip.

Keep you guys posted,
Cheers,

I just measured the exit holes (without dB-killers), they are 52mm in diameter.

Thanks man, please can you send me a picture of the original LV baffle and measure the bore on both sides? The cans are for sure identical in bore (50mm) with different length sizes 370mm for my SBK GPstyle and ~480mm your SBK Ovale. Thanks in advance.

The narrow tube of the dB-killer is 35mm.
Total length is around 150mm, but is has a curve into it.
Will post the picture later.
