Flat battery - jump start

I've got a Honda Falcon 400 with a flat battery, can I hook it up to my X using jump leads to fire it up, as is done on cars?

:sleep01:

I guess it would work Denny. Just mind that your XT must be running while trying to kick the start button on the other bike. I hope you understand what I am saying mate..

I've jump started one bike from another without any problems before. As J_maker says make sure your donor bike is running as you would for a car. Plus leave it hooked up and running for a few minutes before trying to start the poorly one.
Good luck.

& be careful with the positive terminals, that you dont short circuit onto the frame! :blob8:

It will work. I have tried.

Yea as above, get someone to hold the X on a bit of revs to get a better charge going and leave the leads on for say a minute before you try and start it. Also once youve go the flacon started leave the X to run for a couple of minutes just to charge the battery a bit more

Thanks for the info folks :)

Was going to do this earlier today, but I went out for a 'quick blast'...which ended up in a 5 hour 450kms blast!!! DOH!! :D :D The joys of my beastie X

Will try the jump start soonish!

Denny 20-06-10 20:04

Soonish appears to be 3 months :D

Tried the above without luck. Got enough power to light the dials but not enough to turn her over. I'm slightly impatient (possibly due to indoor parking + CCC's + other people there) and tried without waiting a good few minutes as Selina said. I probably waited 1 minute tops before trying again again with no luck.

Does this mean the battery is dead?

Should I be more patient next time?

Should I hook it up to the car battery for more juice?

*edit* I just thought of something...I think my jump leads are crap. I remember having trouble starting my mates mini with my leads, only for it to start first time with some leads I borrowed from a mechanic friend. Another question mark???!?!

Anybody??

This is a bike that I'm looking after from a mate while he's in the UK. He's been gone for a year & I don't know when he'll back mind! I regularly gave her a quick blast to keep things turning during winter, however I was unable to do so for three weeks...which is when it went south. If it's new battery time (or one of those optimiser things) then this bike will be sitting under a cover until matey shows up.

hi ya, i'm guessing the battery is stone flat? if so, if it stays in this state for even a week you will be unlikely to bring it back to full health and i have found even an optimate type charger is unlikely to sort it out, possibly a new battery im afraid as batterys work best with a little work, loss and charging

yes you can jump from a car,[the honda a 12v?] i normally would try it first without starting the car as a bike requires less power and less chance of damaging surges from the car's alternator

hope this helps
