WHO has installed a REV counter on their X&R '04-'09?

there is a research over the last couple of weeks on the Hellenic forum, concerning installation of a digital or analog REV counter on our XT's.
We have come up with several suggestions but all ends up on "how to install & how can we get a pulse on our X's and R's"
Referring to anyone that has -succesfully- installed or knows how to install any REV counter (analog or digital) except the PC display option that Kev kindly showed us --as far as not everyone can afford one--.

any help from those who did it, is much appreciated :660:

Kev 27-01-10 22:49

Kev did it back in 06 & listed all the different types? I spoke about the difference between the 06 & 07 models when they changed from a twin spark motor to a single spark & how it effected the rev counter in the ASK KEV section.

Info in the mod section under.

RPM PICK UP WIRE IS THE ORANGE WIRE FROM THE ECU TO IGNITION COIL, OR RAP THE REV COUNTERS INDUCTIVE WIRE AROUND THE HT LEAD.

gianni1951 29-01-10 06:40

The cost is about 40 Euro. The producer is GPT, an Italian producer. I attach link for more informations. This one is the simplest kind of REV produced by GPT. In any case, for my expectation it's very good. It doesn't need to modify the bike. Have an internal battery that is in function from more then two years. The sensor is a cable that work per induction and need only to be near the spark plug cable (see the cable fixed with red strip to spark plug cable, in the attached pictures).
It's settable for avery kind of engine. Of course it depends on what you are looking for. But, I repeat, in my opinion is very usefull (set up and so on). I would to explain better, but this one is the limit of my English. In any case, if you need further informations, don't hesitate to ask me. I will try to answer. Sorry and best regards. have you a nice day. Gianni.

Vatraxos 04-02-10 11:49

Hello Gianni, could you please tell us from where did you bought it for 40 euro?
Because from a fast search, the minimum price that I have found it, is 84 euros.
Unfortunately the official GPT site, doesn't have a price.

gianni1951 04-02-10 17:19

Hello, Vatraxos.

It was ordered by my Yamaha dealer (VALLI Moto - Renate) to GPT, because this model wasn't disposable in his wharehouse.

Of course, I'm speaking of two years ago. May be its price be growth up, but I don't think two time.

If you are interested in that, I can ask to VALLI, and tell you the actual price. If it's profitable, I can buy it and send it to you.

Bye.

Here is another for you.

Vatraxos 05-02-10 09:13

Thanks you guys for the fast replies.
Gianni if it isn't a trouble for you, it would be great to ask for a price at your local dealer.
In the mean while I will keep searching eBay for prices.
The linked ebay price for GPT tacho is 55+25shipping for greece :(

While searching we have also found the following electronic tachometers:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Yamaha-generator...item4a93908e4a
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Tach-...Q5fAccessories
These are made for ATV's and Supercross bikes which don't have RPM meters. They are suppose to feet at any type of bike.

I have also made an extensive search for analog tachometers but without any result so far. :sad3:
I haven't found any that has the technical characteristics required for XT660.
Almost all the analog tachometers require tachometer output from the bike.
Some rpm meter dealers, offer adapters for the luck of tachometer output.
In such cases, the cost of the tachometer+adapter is too expensive to risk buying.

p.s Gianni's tachometer is much more beautiful.... :)

platty 05-02-10 13:30

Kev - many thanks for the very interesting Koso Link.

They seem to have a fairly extensive range from relatively simple through to fairly complex multi function displays.

Vatraxos - some of these include analogue units that seem to be suitable for XT's

I rather like the DL-02 (Digital) or the GP Style (Analogue) units. Both have a temperature display and I'm sitting here trying to remember whether the XT660 engine already has a suitable mounting option to install a water temperature sensor.

I see there is at least one source here in Australia and price - well if the quality is o/k I suppose you get what you pay for.

gianni1951 05-02-10 15:52

Hello,
I asked to Valli (local yamaha dealer) the actual price of Micro GPT. The answer was 58 Euros + IVA (20%). So the total price is 69.6 Euros. Vatraxos, I think is not convenient, because of shipping.

I seen the Koso link attached by KEV. It's very nice, and I agreed with Platty. It may be an interesting solution.

In any case, if you need other don't hesitate to ask me.

Bye. :thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Vatraxos 05-02-10 19:56

Thanks a lot.
I have also contact GPT official store and they have also replied for 70euros including shipping.
At least we have cross-checked the price :P

I have one of these but use it to set up clutches on Mini Moto's. I used it to set up the tickover then will fit at some point to the XT. Not sure where it came from though as a friend gave it to me. If you search mini moto parts shops as the mini moto guys use them all the time to set the Spinning clutches when racing to get them to kick in at just the right time.

Tachometer

I installed an anolog rev counter, connted it to ECU as i have an 06 XTR, but it seem to be under reading by 1500-2000 rpn, any ideas?

Vatraxos 11-10-10 09:54

Hi, I have finally managed to find a cheap GTP micro rpm.
I have installed in yesterday and it seems that it's working dine for low rpm (1200-3000) but after that it goes too high with maximum rpm up to 115000.
Any ideas? Gianni1951 do you have the same problem??

Hi,

no, I haven't this problem. If the setting is correct (I mean kind of engine and number of cylinder), may be you have some extra impulses if your electrical cable is too much near to solenoid. You can try to move the cable in between the coil and spark plug. Nearer spark plug. I'm sorry, but there is no explanation to your question. Is a non sense. I think you have electrical noise received by rev cable. You can try also to shorter the cable to reduce the sensitivity.

Ciao.

Rev counter

I have the same problem, i connect the GP style anolog on to my orange wire on the ECU, but it seens to under read by 1500 -2000 rpm?

Kev 11-10-10 12:08

2004 to 06 XT's have twin spark ignitions, ignition sparks every 360 degrees of crank shaft rotation.

2007 to 2010 XT's have single spark ignitions, only sparks every 720 degrees of crankshaft rotation.

So to answer your question you need to change the input reading on your rev counter to get the correct RPM range. It should read around 1400 rpm at idle.

Think the problem is mine only has 3 settings , 4 , 6 ,8, cylinder seetings??

Hi,

if we are speaking of the same rev (Micro RPM GPT),

I'm copying by manual :

there are present two buttons, one with ARROW UP and another one with ARROW DOWN, for easiness will call them P1 as ARROW UP and P2 AS ARROW DOWN.

Set up :

Press P1 for 4 sec, after will appear SET UP, then release P1
Pushing P1 you'll scroll the parameters
Pushing P2 you change the parameters. The features are the following :

t (strokes) 2 or 4 (default 2)

p (pistons) from 1 to 8

H (max rpm) from 1.000 to 25.000 (default 7.000).

Is the same rev counter type ???

Vatraxos 13-10-10 11:32

Hello guys, thanks for the response.
I have already performed some calibrations on stokes and pistons configuration settings (I am talking about micro rpm).
I get the correct rpm on idle 1400. If for example I use more pistons, I get 700 rpm on idle or 400.
I have activated in parallel the secret menu to compare with the default XT rpm meter.
By doing the above comparison I have noticed that the problem starts from 3000 rpm, where the micro rpm meter starts to over-count.
I have also checked in the manual that if you have problems you should try to make a small coil with the rpm cable around the spark.
That didn't work for me.
Do you think that if I cut the cable it will improve the behavior?

Kev 13-10-10 11:58

Fit a 10K ohm resistor inline between the orange coil wire & rev counter.

You can also try connecting the the rev counter wire at the ECU not at the coil.

:thumbsup[1]::thumbsup[1]::thumbsup[1]::thumbsup[1]:

Otherwise cut the cable (50 mm. per time and repeat the test).

Bye.

Vatraxos 13-10-10 14:28

Thanks a lot!!!
I will try the above and come again with the results!!! :toothy12:

p.s Kev, in order to fit the resistor, if i understood well, I have to cut the wire.... am I correct?

No, you have to unsolder the cable, put the resistor betwen circuit and cable and resolder. Bye.
