Fuel or electrical fault, please help
I have a 2006 660x, 01 ecu, 2000 miles on the clock. The bike stood over the winter plugged itno an optimate. It started first time to get me out for an mot but when starting the bike after the mot, the battery was flat. I jump-started it to get me home and remember the bike run a little lumpy on the way home for the first time. Ive bought a new battery as recommended on this site, from ebay for 35- as opposed to 120- at webbs P.Boro (thanks for the pointer there). Ive fitted it today and been out for a blast to discover a problem.
The bike starts and doesn't miss a beat until you ride along and let go of the throttle to slow down, the bike stalls. it wont bump on the clutc but will start straight away on the button. If you tickle the bike along it starts to misfire a little as you go along. I have not experienced the surging stuff before but even so this i feel is different as it just dies. This seems to happen if slowing down from 60 or over that. Does the dash reset itself if flat? Nightmare.... Any ideas greatly reeceived as I want to go and play for the first time it what feels like bloody ages.. dave |
Did you empty the tank and fill with fresh petrol? Check for gunge at the bottom of the tank and through to the injector. Clean as necessary.
My bikes have to sit for long periods sometimes and the petrol is first to go off then check battery and all electrical contacts for condensation/furring - clean and coat with WD40 or similar. |
Have you put any fresh petrol in? Petrol that lyes in the tank can go off and spilts into water and the other chemicals and will never be the same as free petrol. Also the fuel filter may be a bit dirty as the old petrol may have rusted/corroded the inside of the tank allowing small bits of dirt into the fuel line blocking the line up a bit.
The misfiring feeling sounds funny maybe this could be to do with the oil or the bike not being up the temperature. Not too sure. Kev will be more of a help. The other thing could be to make sure the air filter is cleaned in case any nastys are inthere, ive seen birds nests make in them sometimes. |
I havent ever done anything with the fuel over winter but see the point. what do I need to do as it is an injection?. If I run the bike flat out it seems okay all the time the throttle is open, the fuel is getting through.

I serviced the bike myself a month ago and havent ridden it since. It has a k and n filter which is as clean as new. Oil bought from yamaha which is semi synthetic.

For proper technical advice you should join the XT Supporters and post in Ask Kev. For 10 you will save more than that in garage bills and have the satisfaction of doing it yourself.
I cannot go beyond the general principles of diagnosis because I am not a qualified mechanic and do not want to lead you into unnecessary work. When you 'serviced' your bike - what did you do? did you disturb any plugs in the wiring loom? it is easy to stretch a thin loom wire and cause intermittent contact. It does sound to me that your problem may be poor fuelling but Kev could guide you through the checks and procedures to diagnose properly. |
I have been paid the subscription and spoken with Kev before with regards to other bits including the fork risers and the sise link which I bought and over the moon with. I didnt realise until i logged on today the subs had ran out but needed to try and sort it....
Anyway thanks for the sound advice, I have had the injector and tank off, fiddly but done, poured a full tank away and started again. Ive done the same run as earlier with new fuel and reckon I have sorted it. If not, do you think it maybe the T.P.S. I have read about the problems with them before, do they just go or are they are problem from day one like the ecu's were?. Thanks again, oh and I will pay my subs.... Dave. |
I will have a good read ton as I am now offline for a beer. Thanks in advance, dave

i know in australia if fuel is left to sit for a period of time in certain places it tends to go hard almost like a lacquer. not sure if your fuel quality is as bad as ours but certainly something to watch for.

I would drain the fuel tank & full up with fresh fuel. Then go for a hard ride with lots of full throttle runs, this will clear the injector nosel. Good luck.
