Garmin
Praise where praise is due, as they say (dunno who 'they' are mind!)
Last year, 24hrs before departure I killed my Zumo550 - it was all my fault, although the guy on the Garmin support desk didn't think what I did actually killed it, anyway rather than try to get it fixed I purchased a new one (ouch!) and was on my way. Last wednesday I decided that it might be worth trying to fix it, so I messed about a bit (Pretty sure the OS was fried), tried the Zum forum, spoke to Garmin who spent a good while on the phone with me before conceeding defeat. I was told that the price of repair was 129.67 for an out-of-warrenty job. I considered that I could probably make my money back on that if I sold it so off it went, Special Delivery (because it's covered up to 500) on Wednesday teatime. On Friday morning, I recieved a parcel from Garmin. That has to be chuffing quick by any standard. Yesterday I opened the box, I was a little worried as the box was much heavier that I though it should be. What I found had me dancing in the living room!!! I know, not a pretty sight for those that have met me.... Inside the box, a refurbished Zumo550 with 2009 mapping on it, as well as a FULL set of bit's bobs (car mount, Map Source 2009, M'cycle moount, RAM Mount, cables, screwdrivers, carry cases etc) all brand spanking new... and 90 days warrenty too. So I sent off my busted unit, paid my 129.64 and got 380 of kit back! Brilliant service. Brilliant Brilliant Brilliant Service Garmin. I now have some excess kit..........

Whenever I've dealt with Garmin Europe (UK) they have always been more than helpful - the first time was back in the mid 90's when I had to pick up a GPS from them just two hours before getting on the ferry to Spain/Morocco - even though it was going home time, the guy in the office stayed behind and showed me all the basic functions and made sure the unit initialized etc. properly before we left...
Since then, whenever I've had a problem or warrenty issue, they have always been knowledgable, and in a similar instance to GULG (once with my GPSII+ and more recently twice with a 2610), the out-of-warranty replacement unit has been essentially brand new, and very quick replacement time (as I understand it, they have a stock of manufacturer referbished units, and once the receive your damaged unit back and make sure it's a genuine fault, they simiply send a replacement out automatically). I must say, their customer service is not as straightforward or indeed 'personal' as it used to be since they incorporated the "press 1 for this, press two for that" automated switchboard...but once you speak to an actual person they seem as knowledable as ever - I guess the call centre is required since so many people now use Garmin products in their cars etc. - they have come a long way since those basic handheld and marine units they started with... xxx |

But you can always just buy the latest version of city navigator, it will still work in your 2610 - all you need to do put the maps into Mapsource (a copy of which comes on the CD) on your PC and upload whichever maps you want... J x |
