Handguards

I see that some members have placed handguards on their XT...
Was wondering which are the best to fit, price/qualtity compared.

Mainly there are 2 types: those with inner metal brace and those made out of just the flexible plastic guards. The result is, that in the event of a crash one of those (the metal protected) will prevent your hands from being hit and the other won't.

The main manufacturers are: Ufo Plastics and Acerbis, in fact the original Yamaha ones are made by Acerbis (with the metal inserts).

Ktm original also fit, handy if your xtx is orange.

Tha Yam ones are indeed Acerbis and as such you can buy them from any dealer or online for about half the price Yamaha charge!

Word of warning though - some of the aftermarket ones don't come with the fitting kit included. Some can charge up to 25 for the bolts and bar adaptors.

I have the Acerbis ones with the metal inside for protecting your levers and I've already benefitted from them in a 20mph spill down some Northants lanes. I went over the bars, the bike came to a sickening halt in a rut and the only damage was a bent handguard and bent front brake lever. They definately saved me from some broken levers 60 miles from home. Worth the expense if you ask me!

Barkbusters

I just fitted a set of the new Barkbusters hand gaurds.the have a removable or height adjustable top section to give you more or less wind protection. They cost $200 nz which is around 65 quid in money from the mother land. The colour match is fantastic and the white lettering and extensions go well with the original graphics.

I had also Acerbis ones.
Not reinforced with metal but they protected me fine when i crashed.
Here in Belgium Acerbis is easy to get and all parts for installing are included.
If u dont find them over here Chrisse, try off-the-road.

I've found some Acerbis dealers in my local area Ive
I'm doubting which brand/type I'd buy... Acerbis is kind of expensive though they're really nice, but I'm also fond of those UFO and Polisport handguards.

Captn, you said that the original (black) KTM handguards also fit, but do I need to change anything? Like parts for installing etc.?

Anyone who knows the diameter of the orignal XT Afam handelbar? thanx

KTM fit as standard with no difference in the clamp to the handlebar which obviously is adjustable and can cater for quite a few diameters, as for the insiert plugs that go in the handle bar ends well those fit too, not sure about the dimension of the Afam bars but I saw an orange XT with orange KTM hanguards on it. Belonged to a client in my local dealer. That's all I know. never saw the man, cause the bike was being serviced, so I couldn'rt ask.
