Can only assume the chain snapped throwing the rear wheel forward under the inertia and the sprocket took a bite or two out the arm..ouch

Could be worse. It could be a BMW that manages to self destruct without the aid of a poorly maintained chain.......on more than one occassion and on more than one model.

When I look at those photos and think back to the 80,000+ miles I covered on a '96 GS1100 and '02 GS1150 at a rapid rate, I have to think the build quality was better on the earlier bikes or I was just fortunate.

My 2016 GS has been as reliable as I'd hope, yes it's had some bushes added to the front forks (but it wasn't failing) but it's never missed a beat.
Had it's 24 month service last week and they noticed (I didn't!) some slight bubbling of the paint on the swingarm, BMW are replacing the lot - that's not bad service really. One thing the GS doesn't have.... soul, and thats why my #1 ride is the XT

Call me cynical, and I do love a good conspiracy theory, but did they really notice 'paint flaking' or run their x-ray over the swingarm and notice the internal fracture and just out of the kindness of BMW to one of its customers they decided to replace the entire unit because the paint is chipped.
