XTR fork spring upgrade?
Hi chaps,
I've done the rear shock on my XTR and now it's showing up the short fall on the front. How can I get more from the stock forks? The bike is used both on and off road. What is currently the preferred setup? My thoughts are preload adjusters, progressive springs, ohlins linear springs. The bike isn't worth much so don't fancy spending huge amounts on the front end. |

thicker oil?..progressive suspension springs and new oil?.kev's fork mod?..
I used kev's mod, which isn't available anymore BUT the dimensions of his bushes is available on the forum. Basically a spacer that sits on top of the spring. My Bro turned some up on a lathe out of nylon material/crash bung. And they took less than 20 minutes to instal and firmed up the front end nicely. Cheap,as in nowt!! |

I've a copy of kegs fork spacer mod and have thought about getting some made up in various lengths to play with.
I'm looking to reduce how harsh the compression is stroke is, with turning the bike into a pogo stick |

fork spacers to add more preload are a great mod for a XTX or XTR that see very little dirt...
for offroad they only turn a bad front end into horrible front end.. as you are going the wrong way in spring preload.. " unless you are a bit on the heavy side" there is no magic fix for it... they are the same forks my Suzuki TM125 had in 1974... The best mod is to drill the holes in the damping rods bigger so they no longer work & put a set of gold valves in... ...

About oil and air gap. As a part of every two year maintenance, I have used various ATF oils and I have played with the gap (+-5 mm). Unfortunately, without log and testing under same condition I can not be of more help. However, the best result/feeling for on/0ff, I had with Elf oil for automatic transmission and factory air gap.
