Oil consumption problem
Hi all,
Since the last 10.000 km I noticed a very high oil consumption, which seems to get even higher now. I used 200ml for 400km. I have read that 1 liter per 10k is quite normal, but my Tenere does use much more. Today we clearly saw some blue smoke coming out of the exhausts during the cold start. There is not blue smoke when the bike is warm. I am not overfilling the oil reservoir and checking it according to the manufacturing instructions (warm engine, wait 2-5 minutes and do the measurement). The airbox is not full of oil, there was some oil in the drainage tube, but only a couple of drops. This is normal and nothing to worry about as far as I have read on the forum. I can see some oil on the outside of the tube near the air breather (see picture), but not enough to explain the problem. Does anyone have an idea where this oil uses come from? I have not been driving faster than 90km/h in the last 10.000km and it is really exceptional to drive above 5000 rpm. So this could not be the problem either. Thanks for helping out! Are you sure that there are no leaks on some oil seals (gear, sprocket..)?
I would try different oil brand, before everything else. Or if you are sticking to the same oil brand for long time, then do the compression test and maybe find some endoscope. Have you checked the spark plug? On the web you can find some useful pictures for reading spark plugs. Last edited by cca; 23-10-16 at 22:01. |

As said try a diffrent oil... Motul 5100 or yamalube..
take the for a long ride get the motor hot & keep it hot for a long time... could be somthing as simple as gummed up oil rings... A good hard ride every now and then can go a long way to keeping the motor clean inside.. .

I agree try a different oil.
When I ran my XTR on Motul 5100 oil it just drank the stuff at an alarming rate. Switched over to Halfords own and it barely touches it. |

For what it�s worth, my �08 Tenere doesn�t have any oilconsumption, at 108.000km�s+; normal ridin' after warmin'up the first km's(with keepin' an eye on the oiltemp.meter) and just regular maintenance with oilchange(Yamalube/Castrol) with oilfilter.

Mine started to drink the 10/40 oil at around 45,000 miles. I changed to a thicker oil (Don't care what brand it is), and it is still plugging on at 105,000 miles. I've used 20/50 for tens of thousands of miles now and it hardly uses a drop.

+1. Unless you ride in a very cold climate, 10W-40 is, imo, too light for the XT motors. I know, I know, you will shout me down probably, but it is, after all, only my opinion.

My XTs have never consumed oil between services. Indeed NONE of my Yamahas have ever consumed oil. I use 10/40 and I switched from Castrol to Bardahl a few years ago and both are excellent. And ps I have always used a little Redex or STP in the petrol every few months, as this is one way of cleaning the injection system and the top end, I would suggest this could help your problem maybe?????

Any news about your bikes oil consumption Jeroen?
I have experienced oil consumption issues on my Ten lately as well. Bike is 2011 and now has 133 k kms on the clock. In reality a little less since I have been riding with different rear size sprockets for most of the bikes life, but still approx 125 k kms in real distance. So it have done quite some distance. Earlier on it used a tiny amount of oil, maybe a top up or two of 3-400 ml pr 10 000 km. Second last distance I noticed a bit more oil usage as it used approx 1,2-1,4 litres pr 10000 kms. Last oil change it was used 15/50 in stead of the usual 10/40 oil and now it has burnt approx 2 litres of oil for approx 8000 kms. I thought going from 10/40 to 15/50 should help reduce oil burnin but there might be other reasons to the oil consume? The oil used last time was Shell RX7 semi syntetic 15/50. And mostly before that I have used full synthetic - dont know if that could have somehing to say? Anyhow - its almost time for an oil change now, which brand and which oil do you guys recommend to see if I can cure the problem a bit at least? It doesnt smoke, only when starting it up when in really could climate like near 0 degrees, when it smokes a little before the engine gets warm. I guess if a different oil doesnt cure a bit of the oil consume it might be time for a top end rebuild. Any opinions about this guys?
