beach riding
Good fun BUT very dangerous you could easily lose your bike, get it stuck 8 inches or less in that sand/mud and you will never pull it out and could easily get stuck yourself. It looks like minky has read his tide tables and knows his stuff but Morecambe bay is not a place to mess with. I have fished that area for thirty years and have had a few cold sweat moments. If you go past your ankles in some areas you cannot pull your feet out, and may have to lie down and try to get you feet out of your wellies. My father lost his best friend off Grange when he got stuck in the sand and the tide came in and drowned him before help arrived. Although minky was on firm beach mostly, some of the gutters you drove past are deadly. Around Walney a big tide is 10 metres and come in at a fast walking pace, get stuck and you could have twenty minutes or less to get free. It only take one soft spot on a seemingly firm beach and its game over.

Hi. It's not morecombe bay as such.
I would never ride that without a guide. This was obviously dangerous but we was a good hour before low tide and it was muscle banks all the way. Thankfully. Askam trail hugs the coast. Hard sand n rocks Both are epic. All the bikes were thorough washed in barrow before we headed home. Thanks for your comments and concern Epic braaaaaappp |

Beach ride
Walney is the edge of Morecambe bay, the channel and the beaches all the way up the island and past the duddon estuary have pockets of quicksand. My post is intended more for people out of the local area who think a beach is firm all over right down to the waters edge. My advice would be to avoid any muddy sand and not to stray more than 50yds from the high water mark. Do not under any circumstances drive within 200yds of the low water mark .when the tide turns the water advances under the sand ahead of the waters edge and what was firm sand 10 minutes ago is now luiquified . also drainage channels can have quick sand bottoms if you walk into one of these it feels like your walking on a bouncy castle/bed mattress do not stop keep moving. People lose bikes and 4x4s every year around this area. Sorry to sound a doom merchant but it is very dangerous for the uninformed.

Your Definitely not a doom merchant, its a incredibly deceptive dangerous place.
The tide so fast coming in and sometimes blocks your path, not to mention the quick sand. Worth heeding the advice, its not to be messed with. |
