Fast Tickover.
Hiya,
My 08 XT660Z has just started ticking over at 2000 RPM. The bike is used almost everyday, I haven't made any changes recently and it's a good few thou off its next service. The revs aren't always returning to tick over either. After a blip of the throttle the revs lag a little before going back to 2000. Also the tickover went up to 3000 for a few seconds and then back to 1500 and then back to 2000 without any input from myself. Can anyone offer any advice? Thanks in advance. Mines doing this but upto 1800. I adjusted it via the screw I plugged in the diagnostic tool and it came up with an air sensor issue. I erased the error code and it went back down It has come back again so I'm greasing the cabled including housing put it back together and the next with be cleaning the pulley on the tb After that I'll take the air pressure sensor back out. The lambda out and clean both All could contribute. But mine started after it was laid up for 7 months If you need to borrow the diagnostic tool inbox me they're 58 quid from your dealer I can give you the item number to give yam if you want it |

The above are two big clues and point to a frayed, fraying or poorly lubed throttle cable(s), or perhaps a trapped or kinked cable.

Update
Hi y'all. Firstly thanks for the advice but I still have the problem after servicing the throttle cable and twist grip. I have a bit more info so maybe it will help the diagnosis. It's seems to be an intermittent fault. Sometimes it's fine ticking sweetly at 1500 rpm then it will jump slightly to 2000. When it is idling at 2000 in 1st with the clutch in if I pop in neutral it drops back to 1500. Pop it back in 1st and it goes back to 2000. Hmmm. I'm not sure where I'm looking to find the sensers you mentioned could you explain further please?
Thanks again Jay |

I have a 2005 XTX with 27000 miles and have had trouble with the tickover for the last 3 years. It is used every day for work rain or shine.
It started rising and falling at random during my 30 minute commute. Sometimes it ticked over nicely, then by the next traffic lights it was racing away. Two stops later, back to normal. I took off the tank and throttle body, cleaned all connectors, nothing obviously wrong that I could find. Put it all back together and it was fine for a few months. Then it started doing it once or twice a month. I also had the revs increase when in gear, but dropped back down when in neutral. This was fixed by lowering the tickover to 1600. It was doing over2000 but as I couldn't get the rpm to show I was not aware, I knew it sounded too high. Now for the first 10 mins of my journey it ticks over at 1600, for the next 10 it goes up to 2000, then by the end it is back to 1600. My rev counter works now, before it only showed 0. It could be engine/ coolant temp related, but why does it drop back down again on the same journey. Same for an air leak, why would it go up and down? Anyway I found an expensive fix for it. I traded the bike in against a new one 😀
