Hi, i have just put new oil to my bike, it is a 2011 XT660X.
First question, i tried google what the capacity is, some say 2.6 litre with oilfilter replacement, some pages says 2,9litre with oilfilter replacement, what is the correct amount of oil it take when ive drained it and replaced the oilfilter? I have filled it now with 2.6 litre, and when I try to use the dipstick to messure the oil, sometimes there is no oil at all at the stick, but sometimes the oil allmost floods out cus its to full. I get so confused right now, dont know what to do hehe

Hi, I believe 2.5 litres just oil and 2.6 with oil filter change, and 2.9 after a complete engine overhaul.

Ok, so when the engine is drained it remain 3desiliters in the sump or something? I filled it with 2.6 now tho, hope that will work

bit of a trick to checking the oil level on the XT660s...

After putting the oil in... take the bike for a short ride..
"or let it idle for a few minutes"
then let it sit for a few minutes & check the oil level
on the dip stick in the tank... add oil as needed..

PS... just sit the dip stick on the filler don't screw it in
to get the oil level

as long as you have fully drained the oil (both sump & chassis) and allowed enough time for the drain to take place, then filled with the right amount, then if your measurements are confusing, then

after waiting for few minutes, maybe the oil in the frame seeps back down to the bottom of the engine or

you do not have the bike horizontal (you can someties see the top of the oil through the removed filler cap or

your quantities were not correct

I generally never put in the amount in the handbook but a little less, run the bike , check the level , if needed top it up. much easier than taking oil out of an over filled engine

It's also good to use measuring jugs and funnels that way you can be some way to being sure of the correct amounts,and as said previously the length of drain time is critical.But most of all is doing it the right way then adapting your own personal tweeks to it,everybody has a different way of doing things.
