Wobbly gear lever
Has anyone got a cure for reducing the amount of play in a Tenere gear lever ? Mine has been slack since I got the bike 6 months ago, I have removed it and closed it up and refitted it a couple of times but it soon get slack again. Kinda worried it might wear the splines eventually

Are the splines already worn?..sounds like it was loose before you got it.
Maybe actually open the gap by using a grinding wheel..so when you then tighten it up again theres more to close up ... Maybe get a new one... Old trick was to hammer nails into the splines/gap.. |

I've gone through 3 or 4.
The lever itself is softer than the splines, so it wears first. After warranty return after return I gave up and had a look at the lever. Firstly the bolt hole is tapped on both sides, so it will never close up as you tighten it, the gap is pretty much fixed in line with the threads. Second, the lever has groves in line with the splines, so you're only ever going to get any purchase on a small part. Accepting that there's not alot to be done, I drilled out the bolt hole and put a long bolt and a locknut on the end. I closed up the spline hole in a vice then refitted it to the bike. I had to push a screwdriver blade into the small gap to open it enough to remount it. Put the bolt through and tightened it. The lever was nice and stable. .... ... ... for about a week ! On the plus side it hasn't gotten any worse years later.

Thanks for the replies, your experience reflects mine. lever it apart to get it on and then its really firm and tight, as you say for a week. I had hoped somebody might have recommended something like a Touratech/Off the Road replacement. I will just keep a eye on it to see how it goes. PS, this photobucket pish is really frustrating
