Seahorse DNA Stage 2 Pre Filter Mod

If you have fitted a DNA Stage 2 Filter cover to your Tenere, and have a foam filter fitted (standard in Australia) then this mod will extend you air filter servicing intervals. Particularly on multi day rides through dusty areas.

I normally ride as "Sweep" rider. My friends are kind enough to say it is because of my mechanical background, but in all honesty, it is because I am usually the slowest rider in the pack. Riding "Sweep" entails riding in everyone else's dust, which, believe me, can be a real problem in the dryer areas of Australia.

I have seen quite a few pre filter arrangements for the XT660Z, but none that I considered to particularly fit my criteria.....SIMPLE, CHEAP, ELEGANT, EFFECTIVE and EASY to use.

I feel that this mod addresses all of those criteria.

NOTE: This mod is for use with a DNA Stage Two filter cover. If you are serious about improving the performance of your XT660Z you should have one of these fitted.

The only tools you will need to complete this mod are a hacksaw and file.

OK. Firstly source an alloy ram air tube in the colour of your choice.

Make sure it is a neat, slightly interference fit in the Stage two cover. Preferably with the bottom edge of the rolled lip, just touching or almost touching the rubber moulding on the DNA cover. (Mine fitted absolutely perfectly.)

Fit the tube into the cover firmly and mark it level with the bottom of the cover. Cut with a hacksaw and tidy up with a file.

The last photo above, shows the amount of dust accumulated on the foam filter after a one day ride, without a pre-filter fitted....

Now source some swimming pool filter pre filter socks. These are readily available at pool shops and supermarkets and usually come in a pack of six for $5 or so.

Fit a sock over the tube as per photo below.

There is no need to secure the pre-filter to the tube as the sock has a knitted band which holds it firmly on the tube, when it is pressed into the DNA cover, the filter sock is locked between the tube and the DNA cover.

I usually soak the socks in filter oil prior to use, and carry half a dozen or so in a zip lock bag with me on longer rides. The socks are so cheap, they can be considered a disposable item.

The tube and filter remain in place due to the slight interference fit with the cover.

Sock replacement takes less than one minute.

Some will say that the diameter of the inlet is reduced with the arrangement fitted....Yes it is slightly. I haven't measured it, but consider it would be less than 5mm I have not noticed any effect on performance and considering the benefits when riding in heavy dust conditions, any negative effect is far outweighed by the convenience gains. If you are pedantic about limiting the reduction in diameter simply reduce the length of the tube slightly.

If you ride in dusty conditions, I'm sure this mod is going to save you plenty of time.
