Brembo Caliper - Seized Top Slider Pin
Hi all,
after an MOT advisory i looked to change the front pads in my Tenere. I've discovered the top slider pins are seized so the caliper isn't floating anymore. What's the best plan of attack? I'm told these calipers aren't servicable but i refuse to believe that an engineering solution can't be found before i'm forced to pay �600 for badly designed equipment. cheers Daz |

You can pull the two parts of the caliper apart easy enough. Then in time honoured tradition, with a bit of elbow grease and time, the slider pins can be cleaned up and made perfectly serviceable again.
The main issue is that the protective rubber boots from both pins are not available from Yamaha as separate parts. But fear not, various BMWs use the same calipers and the boots can be bought separately. You can even get new piston seal kits as well, which aren't available from Yamaha. In otherwords, the front calipers (and rear for that matter) are serviceable - just not with Yamaha branded parts! You're a star, thank you.
What a nightmare it was though. I've just managed to get the caliper carrier off which houses the top slider pin. Seized solid so a bit of brute force, heat and easy oil was the only way to do it. In the process obviously damaging the two rubber seals so i'm going to order them now. So the next Q is copper or lime grease? cheers |

Don't use copper grease as it is petroleum based and will rot the rubber. I use red brake grease, which is safe in direct contact with rubber. You can get it
here. I think Halfords sell it too, but it's nearly twice the price.

There really should be a 'thank you' button on this forum - that's invaluable information. I was servicing my xtz calipers last night and would have started ripping them apart assuming parts were readily available.

There was a similar thread not that long ago...I had the same problem. I cleaned the pin up painted and greased it..all OK after that. I'm sure there's a parts crossover for that pin somewhere as it's Brembo. Maybe an older Gas Gas might have it,e.g. older 1998 Gas Gas rear Brembo uses the same rear pads as our XTZ's. A pin from that surely should fit?
My local Yamaha dealer give me a packet which had Nissin written on it for €3 each as far as I can recall. Exactly the same.Worth dandering in with the part to somewhere else instead of getting disgustingly fleeced at the BMW shop? .

Yes the calipers front and rear are the same on the R and Z (although the Z's additional right hand front caliper is a mirror image casting the seals, pins etc. are all the same). The X has a completely different front caliper, but the rear is the same on all Xt660s.
As Ohlins suggests, there are quite possibly other sources of caliper refurbishment parts out there if you've got the time and inclination to do the cross-referencing. They may work out cheaper, but on the other hand they may not? For example the pad retaining pins can be bought easily on ebay, but are of unknown origin/quality. All I can say is the parts listed in the above post are everything you'll need, reasonably priced, good quality and in stock. The cross-referencing has been done, they have been tested by yours truly and will fit perfectly enabling a full rebuild of both front and rear calipers (contrary to what Yamaha say is possible). |
