Well my son is now 19 years old, and for the last 2 years he has been at the University of Westminster in Harrow, studying music technology / production / marketing.
He is already in contact with a producer and he will start his own recording label. Things are moving pretty fast from his little guitar and amp to a full 24 track recording outfit with computer recording software and arrangment, sampling and all kind of wizardry which is all unaccessible to me as he is miles ahead in technology. I am a plug and play musician, I stick my bass into a valve amp and away I go with a real drummer, guitarist and keyboard player.
I don't belong in his world as it is way too advanced for me, YET my son summoned me a few months ago, say, father I need to sample your Fender Precision bass, so please come over with it, new strings, and perfectly tuned and play this and that part, this chord here, that chord there, and he was telling me what notes to play etc etc...
He had me plugged into a board with monitors, no bass amp. I was not too confident about the sound as I prefer my old tube amp, but I went along with it, learnt the part, played a couple of times against the metronome and I said to him so where's the drums, keyboard etc? he said the drums are here and lifted a slide and I could hear such a clear set of drums you could almost here the drummer breathing through takes. And as for the keyboard he sampled a pink floyd organ from dark side of the moon, (how did he know he wasn't even born in 1973, 20 years exactly to his birthday!)
So that sampled organ was lovely and I played my bit with pride in 2 takes, the bass part first and the melody in between after.
by the time he emailed me the finished product I was blown away, I never knew I could hear myself so clean as well as the rest of the prerecorded band. Next he wants me to put a guitar solo onto the track, which should be fun.
Anyway have a listen to the track, his name is Marco, born 06/07/93, when he was 10 I taught him how to play guitar lefthaded as he is a lefty and that was hard work for me because I play right handed. 10 years later he is producing music out of his bedroom which is amazing.
