cable routing - urgent :(
Hi
Just in the process of fitting my Renthal Dakar bars. First impressions, they seem A LOT better than the standard ones!!! But the cable routing is driving me feckin mad!!!!! ive moved the throttle cables from under the oil pipe, but also put them under the main loom. This i think gives you the most length....but will rub the headstock paint off in no time ![]() ![]() putting the throttle cabales back into the throttle tube is a massive ball ache!! i must be doing something wrong...there has to be an easier way. i finally did it and started tightening up the kill switch assembley when it wouldnt tighten any more.......LOCATOR LUG.....arrgghhh!!!!!! ![]() my options are... A) cut the lug off. dont fancy this though as its there to stop the whole lot turning on the bar B) drill a hole in the bars. This will be a pain in the arse! getting the right position & if you roll the bars forward or back your limited to moving the kill switch part. (unless you drill the hole a fair bit bigger than the lug?) Meant to be riding to France next a week on Thur.....please help ![]() |

tough one that!
drill the bar and weaken or trim the locating 'nub'. i went with the trimming option a couple of years ago, tho i did leave a slight height to the nub(1mm), so far with no problems with slippage |

Just trim it off. I tried drilling the first set of Renthals I put on, it was a massive PITA to do and I ended up with them at the wrong angle.
I've not had any problems with them spinning on the bars.

I had a problem with the locator lug when fitting Renthals to my XTR. I called Renthal and they said "Do NOT drill the bars - they could crack". Reluctantly I cut and filed off the lugs thinking it would lead to all sorts of trouble, but the lugs were gone in 5 minutes and the bars haven't shifted a millimitre in 1000 miles.

Thanks guys.
Might put a bit of old inner tube or something similiar under it so it has something extra to clamp on to. These throttle cables seem a little tight with these Dakars bars ![]() |

A bit late but,,
I too trimmed the locator pin off, I took it flush. However I too worried about the fittings moving on the bars, so I stretched (as thin as it would go) a small piece of amalgamating tape around the bars, just enough to go all the way around. Probably over-engineered, but the switchgear doesn't move and I didn't need to over tighten the screws.

trimmed the locator off and put a small peice of push bike inner tube around the bottom of the bar, it just helps the switch gear grip on.
I went through all the trouble of tapping my Renthals for my barksbusters....and they dont really fit ![]() ![]() |
