Buyers Guide

Hi everyone. I am new to the forum and this is my first post. I looking at buying a 2008 XT660Z Tenere from my local dealer. The dealer has for sale a second hand, 3 previous owners, model in white. It has covered 15,000 miles and has a Yamaha service history. Mods to the bike are bar risers, renthal bars, hand guards and a lowering link to reduce seat height. The dealer is happy to remove the lowering link should I need it (I am 5' 11").

I was wondering if I could tap into the experience of everyone here and ask if there is anything in particular I should be looking out for when buying this bike?

Not sure on the Z as i owned an R but condition is a big light as to how the bike was looked after, so check the engine cases for chips, peeling or wearing of the paint and also the rims/spokes.

At that milage the valves would have need to have been checked at least once at 12k miles (if i remember correctly). If not it should cost a couple of hrs labour.

At that milage the chain and sprockets will be pretty much on there way out or done if they havent already been changed. Also check that the cush drive rubbers are not too loose, if there is more than a couple of mm rotational movement on the rear sprocket they probably could do with either changing or packing out.

After these few things from what ive read its pretty much standard looking at a bike and feeling how it rides on a test ride etc

Think they extended the valve check to 24k , cush drive have been know to give up within a couple of thousand miles so make sure they are new in there , other than the obvious they are well built

Thanks for the above guys. I will go into the dealer today antalk to him about the valves clearances and check the cush drive. I remember that when I first looked the cases were in good condition and the spokes seemed fine with none obviously loose. I will take a look at the sprockets and chain also. Much appreciated.

Also look if the breather is replaced by a modified one(only for '08 models).

Pull off the regulator/rectifier plug behind the horn and have a close look for any evidence of shorting, melting or corrosion on the contacts. Ask if there have been any warranty claims made against the bike, what does the service record look like. Three owners in three years might mean something so delve deep?
