Anything else than TKC80
Hi there,
I want to go for knobbies at some stage and was thinking about TKC80 but the price is quite high for a pair. Is there something cheaper (knobbies) what can perform ok on and off the road (but still more off)? XT660Z 90/90 & 130/80 also seen sowhere that 140/80 will also fit! Is it true? (looks better that for sure ) |

A 140 will fit - I suppose it depends on the type of off road riding you mean, wet boggy, gravel or a mix - this I would say affects your choice.
Say a Karoo for the wetter stuff v say a K60 Scout for the drier stuff. A lot comes down to trial and error - tyres / mile is also something that you will only get a feel for by experience. Hope some help.

As Fiddich says, it's trial and error.
However, the initial price for the TKC's might be high, but compare that to the price/miles you get out of a cheaper tyre? I can buy Enduro Comp's for less, but they only last 1000 miles... TKC's will last about 4k-ish with me. Furthermore, off-road tyres that last longer are generally less grippy (due to the hard compound used). Better grip = less life ; Longer life = less grip It all comes down to your own riding style. I recently fitted some cheaper tyres (road bias) on the grounds that; a) they were cheaper than the TKC's (for a road trip), and b) I thought they might have better road manners than the TKC's On first count, yes, but the second count, in my experience and with my riding style I wish I had usd the TKC's. Yes TKC's over a road tyre for wet weather riding !!!! Hourses, courses, humps and bumps.... we all need different things at different times

I know this sound like I'm banging on, but,,,, I rode from the Lakes to Plymouth, then through Northern Spain dirt through Potrugal andhome again.... the TKC's were still servicable in terms of tread, it's just th sidewalls were goosed due to the hard taskmaster driving us on through the rougher stuff....

I would echo what GULGo says - I doubt you'll find a knobbly tyre that rides better on-road than the TKC... anything more aggressive is going to be a compromise on the road, and wear more quickly...
Unless you ride a lot of wet grass, the TKC is the puppy for the Tenere... Jx |

A few days in Devon... I've ridden to the Spanish Pyrenees through France, done three days of trail-riding and then ridden back again - then got another couple of thousand miles out of the tyres in the UK. Does that answer your question? I've tended to junk mine at about 5000--5500 miles, they're still legal at that point (probably 3mm tread in the middle of the rear), but not much use on dirt. Most people rave about TKCs (although plenty also complain about the life as well), and I keep thinking I ought to try a pair for the sake of comparison, but as they cost more than the Mitas, and I've not found anything to complain about with the E-09s, it's kinda difficult to justify the experiment.
