Not that I own one (but I do admit to looking!) this is a good reference for information, and maybe a better source of tracking down a reasonable quality bike ...

Restored one, nice and easy to work on, cheap parts, reliable enough, plodder on road, pig off road. Enjoyed tinkering with it more than riding it though. Sold it on at a small profit. Occasionally see it out and about still. Would I have another? Probably as a project, yes.

I came across a Brit on a bike like this in Morocco. He was happy traveling on it for 5 months when I met him, without mayor problems, but he did fully rebuild it before he left. The next morning he had a very hard time kickstarting it though!
The panniers really are a nice design, in a fall they just let go and you re-attach them without any damage. |

The Armstrong mt500, drum brake, kick start only, was the version with the unreliable reputation. Where as the Harley Mt350, twin disc, electric/ kick start, latter version was more reliable. But lets face it the majority of these bikes will have had a pretty tough working life, so you take a chance with any.

I used to have a 175SX Harley D (cost me 100 2nd hand & they fetch a fair bit more now i can tell ya) back in the 80s was good fun seeming as it was actually put together by AMF in Italy (HD nearly went bust back then and the US Gov bailed em out due to them being a national treasure icon whatever etc)... I've been looking at these MT350's for a while, the rotax engines are said to be bullet proof (not real bullets ok)... trouble is if you like the grunt of your 660 then you're in for a big disappointment as they're gutless... but none the less a cheap run-around a great for London traffic... there's always plenty of good ones on ebay... expect to pic one up registered for around 1250
