Xtz model history

Hi does anybody know the differences between the 2008,2009 & 2010 xt660z? 

Very little AFAIK.

- Graphics/Colours
- Seat is a bit different on the 09/10 bikes to the 08
- Oil breather catch tank is different.

Can't think of anything else off the top of my head. Anyone care to add to the list?

Early ones had wiring loom & rectifier problems, they improved the breather system on the later XT's & decals.

Do you know if they actually changed the rectifier plug on the later bikes, or just started plugging them in properly?

They have changed something as the new ones don't suffer from the problem.

I do think in some of the cases the actual terminals were the problem with low tension on them, causing resistance, melting of the plug ETC.

I have seen some Z's with water ingress in the rectifier plug where the seal has failed to seal. So there were a few problems why the Z would not charge.

As mentioned we have not seen any repeat failures

Agreed, but I would be checking mine if I owned a 2008 model.

I would replace the terminals & seal the connector at the regulator if I owned a 2008 Z, better than walking.

If you want peace of mind, just unplug the connector, check for any signs of overheating on the terminals, if you have it then approach your dealer, if you don't then simply pack with dielectric grease inside and out, clip firmly back in place and stop worrying.

There are far greater things to worry about, the ball, the child, the car at the junction, has this guy seen me....

I picked up my bike in May 2008, it's one of the very first registered bikes in the UK. It has never suffered this problem, which I attribute to being properly PDI'd before I took delivery. As Tom says, check it, make sure you put it back together properly then enjoy the ride.
