is this tent too big for my bike???
I am looking for a new, larger tent for a 12 day stay at the same site.
My weekend tent is perfect for just that, but I would like to be able to stand up, and have a little more space around me. Plus if its raining, sitting in my little Vango Cyclone is awfully cosy. So, I am considering a Vango Orchy 400, 12.5KG! with a pack size of 73x28x26cm...gasp! LINKY : http://www.vango.co.uk/tents/orchy-400.html It would be around the same size as one of my dry bags, and with that plus my usual luggage it would still weigh less than a pillion, and the weight would be lower probably as well, if I use my panniers too...... Has anyone else taken a huge tent on their bike, and any tips/advice? What do you think? Is this overkill?

Yes.
It is. But, it's a great tent. I had a look at a few big Vangos a couple of weeks ago. I do have a Sunncamp Vario 600 Platinum for sale , footprint, carpet the lot, too big for us now and it's like new!

Noooo, that was a Shrike6, the Sunncamp is MASSIVE...
6 meters wide, 8 meters long (with the canopy up) and 2 meters high at the top (but it's a tunnel so it soon drops away). It has two bedrooms (2 berth & 4 berth), with a living area of 3m x 4.2, a side porche and a storage room (on the side. Like I said the Sunncamp is the huge! We're going to replace it (and the Shrike too) with a Vango Marits 500, which better suits the 3 season camping we do as a family.

yep, you really want a tent that you can erect reasonably fuss free...those big jobbies look a bit of a bore to erect. And taking down when its hosing down doesn't look much fun either.

The Vango Samara 400 looked very sturdy, and a nice design with fairly upright sides.
Although smaller than the Maritsa 500.....

Actually we used a similar sized tent during our trip through the Pyrenees.
![]() Quechua T4.1. 10kg. It is very nice and comfortable to have so much space. Especially when the weather is less than good. You can stand up and sit in a dry area, even cook without getting wet. But truthfully, if I were to do the same trip again I'd take a smaller lighter one that packs up better as well. This was nice and all. And it still fit on the bikes with all the rest of the luggage. But it is overkill really. |
