plates for swingarm adjusters ?

Sorry for the daft question lads.

Assuming i have a box section type swingarm with a plate at the end with 2 locknut system for moving back/forward, can i remove the 2 nuts and remove the plates ?
The XT seems to have the crappiest plates ever so want them off to get nicer ones on there or these ones coated.

Well that looks 100% better

All rust and flaking paint removed and coated with gloss black.

Still debating if it will look better in matt black, but pretty happy with the results.
