Kickstart for the XT

Hey Kev.

I talked to this guy who said that behind the engine cover on the right side of the engine, there is actualy kickstart "axle". But that for some reason Yamaha didn't follow through on it and decided not to install the actual kickstart lever.

Personaly I would not mind making the alterations needed in order to install a kickstart (drill a hole in the engine cover). On travels, I'd no longer have to worry about the battery being worn out from camping equipment use (GPS -recharger, AA battery recharger, laptop, etc.).

What you say Kev? Possible or no-go?

Do these engines have a decompression system being eletric start?

Having a kickstart only TTR600, you would definately need the decompression mechanism as well. Virtually impossible to get past TDC without it, as I found out when the decomp cable snapped.

Not sure which 660 motor he was looking at, but the XT660X/R have no such shaft. The gear lever shaft runs where the kick starter shaft would be.

The decompressioner is automatic & would work fine if we could ever fit a kick start.

Thanks Skunkmoto and Kev.

I have personaly very little understanding of the inner workings of the engine. Which was propably why I was so easily convinced that it might readily be possible to fit a kickstart.

Oh well. Thanks for the replies.

Could your man be thinking of the old 660 engine which was based on the even older 600 crank case? These had the facilities to install a kick starter and had the hole in the casing only blanked off in the later models. That would be just to the left of the clutch. Not enough room on our beauties.

Could be, muppdog. Sounds like a reasonable explanation. Anyway, he could have just been shooting his mouth off on something he realy didn't know anything about. And since I know very little of the inside of the engine, I was easily convinced. Or maybe I just wanted it to be true .
