XTX retro/classic scrambler project.
Hi all, ive had my XTX for a few years now and have even taken it to Italy and back. For the money I really don�t think you can beat the bike but there lies the double edged sward. Part exchange values are very low. I have been considering part exchanging my XTX for a Triumph Scrambler. I know its not a proper off roader but I like the style of old scramblers, Triumph have just mixed this with modern day reliability and practicality. But ive also always wanted to do my own custom bike and since my XTX is such a good, clean reliable example with extras like the 2 into 1 wrap around exhaust ive been considering the idea of customizing it in the style of the old scramblers. Although im still undecided the rough plan is this:
Take off all the plastics Replace the headlight with a 20cm round off road light Chop the tail off the frame and all redundant brakcets. Remove the airbox and fit open filter Fit power commander to correct fueling Low custom made seat Raising rear suspension by 20mm or so. May be fit TKC 80's as you can now get a 17� front in them. Ive already stripped it and done a very rough Microsoft Paint drawing showing the idea. Its very rough but it shows what im aiming for. Like the idea,...thats a seriously wide looking back wheel !! must be just the angle the pic is taken

Ye its the picture angle, standard size rear wheel with Distanza tires. I think modern bikes hide all their engineering and its a big shame. I like to see how they are made and how they work. I'm still not 100% if i will go through with it. Once i cut that tail im committed :-) Need to check the left hand side and see if the voltage regulator and the ECU can be moved without altering the cabling. The idea is to make a slim box under the full length of the seat. Where the battery sits now and where the snorkel used to be. In this box i plane to put all the plugs and the ECU to hide them. Will put the voltage regulator some place it can get fresh air. I don't plan to do any messing around with the wiring harness. I think a stripped XTX will look the biz but more than that be a little different while staying practical and usable. We will see.

Yes I like the idea, the XT are so cheap here in sweden most folks only want KTM!
If I could afford I would like to buy another XT jsu to do a cafe racer with it. Saw someone but a Ducati monster plastic on a XT but he sold it before he finished. But if I would built one I prefer the 2-2 system like.

(Now sold on, sob) 2011 Blue XT660X with gold wheels, was 26,500 km. Engine mods: K&N Stage 1 filter, DNA Stage 2 filter, snorkel removed, Kev fuel mod fitted. Just fitted Michelin Road Pilot 3 tyres. SOLD the XTX for a Super Ten 1200. And just bought a Raptor 700 so staying on here for some tips.... |

Well for years I have been fancying a bike which I have never seen in the flesh, called the Derbi Mulhacen, it's a very well designed Cafe' Racer that interestingly enough has got the exact same engine as the XT's 660!

Digging the concept!!
I have a Honda Dominator (NX650) in Oz and am amazed at the effort that some tuners have exercised over these bikes to make them unrecognisable from their former lives. For example: http://www.bikeexif.com/honda-nx650 Google "NX650 Flat Tracker" and you will get loads of ideas along the lines of what you are thinking. There is one of those Derbi's for sale in Fowlers in Bristol. Was looking at it a few weeks ago. I've ridden a few other standard bikes with the 660 motor and I'm amazed how slow and bunged up they feel compared to mine with the after market exhaust and filter.
I stripped the bike more this evening. The more I strip it the more I can see the bike I'm trying to find. Its there its just hidden by loads of usless metal and plastics. I will make the final call this weekend once I've had time to strip it of everything I don't need. I can see a few problems but hey that's part of the fun......... **** it, I'm cutting it Friday evening. In for a penny in for a pound :-o |

Ive got the bike stripped almost to the point of cutting now. Air box out and all the electrical cables released from their various mountings and zip ties. I took out the air box and sat there thinking about what to do. The frame looks fantastic all open but i do have a few concerns about using direct cone filters. First off practicality in the UK as its always wet and i want the bike to be usable, mounting everything will take some fabrication but more than that i know some **** will nick em when the bike is parked up. For that reason im going to try something a little different. Im going to keep the air box but heavily mod it. This will allow me to put all the cables, ECU, and the power commander on top of it out of the way. I will post pics of the planned mod.
Ordered a load of parts and some service stuff this afternoon. Filters, tyres, power commander all on their way. Im now looking for a large single round head light to set the bike off.
