Renthal Bars
Hi all.
I'm after a set of bars that are stonger than the stock items. After looking on the Renthal website I'm at a loss. It states that their bars don't fit the XT. Can anyone confirm which bars will fit the XT without any raisers (looking to buy in the UK). I'd like to replace the bars with something that resists bending when I bin the bike down the lanes (as I have this last weekend - now my left is 2 inches lower than the right!) Thanks in advance Matt |

Also it might be worth sending a pm to Johnny cause he has fitted new bars, not sure which, but I am sure he'll be able to tell you, and to clarify if its an easy task or not. The thought of removing all that switchgear, grips, levers and brushguards, gives me vertigo... poor you, sorry about your spill. Last edited by CaptMoto; 14-08-06 at 15:41. |

you will need to find the diameter of the bars ,im quite sure there is a big range of suitable bars around for the xtx, have a look on this site.

I'm actually looking forward to replacing the bars - gives me an excuse to spend more time in the garage. I've been wanting to replace the grips with something a little more off road for a while too! I wasn't that upset about the spill - I was having the time of my life with the XT on some trails in Northants with some friends in the TRF. They think I'm mad to trail such a big bike but as its the only thing I've trailed, I can't really complain |

Standard size bars (7/8" or 22.8mm) which is the type on the xt's, are available from all off road bike shops, all you have to do is pick the shape (slight differences in height and angles, designed to please individual riders) and colour. These bars will fit straight on except for the drilling of two small locating holes on each side, they stop the indicator switches etc and the throttle assembly from spinning around.Just copy from the original bars! See pics. P.S. make sure you buy alloy bars NOT STEEL ! The alloy bars are A LOT STRONGER!!!!

Thanks Stevie.
I've been looking at the bars online and I think the 22mm Renthals in Black will do me fine. Good point about the drilling the hole - thanks. Quick question about the Hardguards though: How in the hell do I remove the gubbins from inside the original handlebars! I can remove everything else from the bars but the gear inside that the end weights or handguards bolt to will not shift. Slidding hammer anybody? P.S. Stevie, you got a set of straight bars there? The look a lot shallower than the originals. I was thinking of going for some with more height on the grips as I use the bike offroad at weekends and like to do my riding standing up (Oh err missus!) Hi Matt,to remove the plug from inside the bars I would screw in a bolt similar to the original but slightly longer, then attach vice grips to the bolt and hammer out (spray some wd40 inside the bars to ease extraction)pic 1. And if that doesn't work, cut the bars where you think the plug ends and tap out with a suitable drift, pic 2.
In answer to your p.s,the bars on the XTX are different from the XTR ,the XTX has alloy renthal type as standard while the XTR has slightly higher, (bendy) steel type as standard(why not alloy??????). If you go for higher bars just make sure the cables and wire's will give you enough clearance.

Quick update on the Bars:
I picked up some 22mm black Renthals this morning. Was going to reuse the Yam handguards but noticed that the XTR internal diametre was larger (hence weaker bar) than the new thicker walled Renthals. As such I was not sure if the internal fitments would fit inside the Ranthals. While I was in the shop I noticed some nice new black UFO handguards.... Anyway, 2 hours later and I've fitted them. They sit about the same height as the stock ones but the black bars look better. Note the new grips - they match the seat! The missus is gonna kill me if she notices the changes to the bike! Thanks again for the help. Matt |
