Rear suspension sag

Hi!

I've recently bought a 09 XT660R with about 5000km on it.
When measuring the sag it is 48,5mm in the max spring preload position and 75,5mm in the min position. I've read that the stock suspension is a bit soft, but is this normal for this shock, or is it time for a replacement?

your sag is measured with your particular weight applied, did you do that? or are you just stretching out the shock? If you applied your weight to the equation, then since we are all different weights generally, it would be hard to answer your question.

Yes, I've done exactly as he describes in the video, but I did it without any riding gear at about 75kg. It just seems a bit saggy when I compare it to my friends 500-EXC, but I guess that is not the right bike to compare it with. Thanks for the reply though!

don't compare to the ktm of your friend...
you can't set stock suspension anywhere near that, without changing anything.
it's made to ride comfy on the road or gravel roads.
any bumps, make it inadequate... either learn to live with it and adjust your speed offroad :-) or spend some money to get it somewhat better.
it all depends what you're expecting from it and what your skil level is.
bear in mind, if you want to go ride with your mates with the ktm's, better get a second bike.... choices choices

I guess you're right, hannesd. When I made this thread I had just barely tried the bike, but now after a few more km's I have to admit that my skepticism was a bit over exaggerated. Instead of just buying better suspension, maybe spending some time offroad to increase my skill level is a far better investment

ok, just to add some more food for thought...
as your skills level will rise, the more you will notice the soft suspension...
still, you can't have a bike that does it all superb, but it can take you everywhere you want.
if you want some enduro riding up to a certain level, then you might concider getting a second play bike.

i only have my xtz for about 2-3 months now, and first, i was a bit dissapointed in the bike, too soft and sluggish.
you just need to learn to appreciate it, you'll get along fine, once you know it's limitations.
if they bother you that much, that it keeps you from having even more fun with it, then concider spending some money on upgrades.
try to calculate how long you think you'll keep the bike, and see if it's worth the investment. (what i'm doing currently :-p )
