Just HOW Strong is the side stand on an XTR ?

As the question says.. Just how strong is the side stand on an XTR?

I have been "told" in the past - "dont put weight on it.. it can snap..!!

So when you climb on - can you use the stand as a support and climb on the pegs ?

I once test rode a Triumph Tiger and the salesman boasted how strong the side stand is and just climb on the pegs..

The XTR has a pathetic little side stand and base.

* Can you climb on the bike using it?
* Can it be modified ?
* Can it be strengthened (i was thinking a shaft up the middle?

Any advise appreciated thanks

Then he's an idiot. The stands are cast alloy, and they flex under the weight, they will break eventually - probably just at the point you need it to work the most!

I had a Tiger...... I'd love to buy British (being one) but I also want quality and value for my hard earned

Yes,
Yes,
Yes.

I have seen (and a few on here were there at the time) a XTR side stand snap under extreme weight. They were using the stand to break the bead of a stubborn tyre. I think it had the entire weight of two people on it, and it was also running at the wrong angle and wrong height. When it is deployed correctly, It'll hold whatever you can load on the bike.

The same guy still has the same bike, only he welded a Landrover Wheel brace to the remaining part of the stand.

I've broken mine twice.
Second time snapped when being strapped down on a Spanish ferry.
Fixed for 60p in Morocco

The steel tube it's made of is thin.
I'll be reinforcing it this winter methinks.
