Cool DNA filter cleaning

Hi guys was wondering what is the best and good value for servicing DNA filters does it have to be the Dna one or is there other products you can use

hello mate, I have been using this for years. Kit contains one "cleaner" and one "lubricant" spray.

mind that the way to keep your filter like new (for ever) is the way you clean it and you have to do as below:

1. take your air filter and spray it allover with the "cleaner" spray.
Let it work for at least 10 mins. It will soak all the dirt.

2. Fill a bucket with tap water. Keep the filter submerged inside the bucket and move it gently back and forth, twist it left and right... this will remove the dirt from the filter. Replace the water with fresh and continue until no more dirt gets dissolved into the water.

3. Take the filter out of the bucket and keep it under gentle water flow under the tap. Water should flow from the inside of the filter towards the outside. This will remove any leftovers.

4. Now your filter is clean. Let it dry alone but not under hot sun or strong heating source. Let it take its time and dry gently. Do NOT force it to dry faster. NEVER EVER blow compressed air to the filter. This will destroy the thin layers that consist the filter. You can use some paper towel, touching the filter to gently absorb most of the water. Then let it dry completely.

5. When it is finally dry, spray with the OIL the OUTSIDE of the filter. Just a thin oil layer, you don't want it dripping oil.

6. Fit the filter back in place and your are ready to rock!

I've used both K&N, JR and Green service kits on DNA filters and all seem to work equally as well as the DNA stuff. Just depends what I have around at the time as my V8 Land Rover runs JR filters and the BSA a K&N. Generally the DNA service kit (cleaner and oil) is the most expensive option, with K&N the cheapest (�9 and free delivery on ebay). Green and JR come somewhere in between. It also depends on what colour you want your filter! K&N and DNA are red, JR is blue and Green is, erm... green!

How long is a piece of string?

Seriously, it very much depends on how and where you ride. If it's dry and dusty, you need to do it more often. From a personal standpoint (and I'd say my riding is pretty average for the UK) I do the air box filter (Stage 1) annually, which tends to be 5000-6000 miles. The stage 3 side cover I do at half that interval (twice a year/3000 miles) as it does tend to pick up more debris than the internal filter.

You can usually get a good idea of when to do it by looking at the dirty side and seeing whether the wire mesh is visible and/or whether the filter still has some visible colour (from the oil). If you can't see the mesh and the filter media is grey/black then it'll need a service.

Here's what DNA say on the matter:

"The servicing intervals depend on the environment that the vehicle is used. Once a year or every 15.000 to 30.000 km is suggested, to keep your DNA filter in top condition. An easy way to check if the filter needs cleaning, is to see if the wire mesh that that is on the dirty side, is visible.
If you can see the mesh, you can continue using the filter. If the mesh is totally covered in debris, you must clean the filter."


Although I wouldn't want to leave mine for 9,000 to 18,000 miles though!
