High oil consumption

Hi,

i'm riding a 2011 xtz at 35k miles and today I started riding with the dipstick showing exactly between the Full and End marks and that was after filling up a liter of oil. When i finished riding (250 miles) the dipstick was DRY!
how much oil consumption is considered normal?
thanks!

First of all make sure you test it the same way ie hot engine and allow a few minutes for it to settle. But if you did that then no way is it correct. I only have to top mine up once between oil changes. Was it being thrashed? Very hot?

did you run the motor for a few minutes before you done the first
check on the oil level.... get a correct reading....
It's not a dip the stick in & look at the oil level on these
motors you must run them for a few minutes as when sitting oil
from the tank seps down into the motor giving a low reading if
the motor is not run before you take the oil level reading...

Mine had high oil consumption after 40,000 miles. I swapped to thicker oil (20/50) and it was much better. I think as the engine gets looser the oil just blows through. On 98,000 miles now with no engine problems.

+1. From my experience this is true. It does depend on the individual engine and its operator, but in general I think big singles do better with a heavier oil. I do admit to being in favour of 15W-50/20W-50 oils for motorbikes in general for my country.

I realise that this way of thinking is probably bad for very cold climates, though.

Yep. Original everything. Gonna try for the big 100,000 still with the original front brake pads.

Mine is also consuming like a 1l every 4000km (already with 32000km)...
Oil used is Motul 5100 15W50.
