hlins fork springs help
Hello to everybody.
I am kind of new in the frum, only have posted some pictures of my mods in the review threads. I bought my new XTR last december. Most of the mods are products from OTR and I had an issue with the last one. I bought the front fork springs KIT. Yesterday when I received the boxe it sais that they are for XT660X The hlins product number I received from OTR is 8716-60. I understand that the springs codes ar as follow: 8716-50 XTX and XTZ 8716-60 XTX and XTZ 8709-50 XTR Please, someone can help me if I can use them or not in my bike? Are them different length? There are spacers in the 8716-60 box and I read in some frum that they must be used in the XTZ and not in the XTX. What about if I use them on the XTR? I already contacted OTR but still have not answer.... I understand that the final number is for N/m messure. Thanks to all of You.

The 5.0N Ohlins forks springs 8716-50 and 8709-50 have been discontinued and are no longer available. Ohlins have, for economic reasons, rationalised their range of fork springs for the XTs.
The only Ohlins springs available for the XTs are the 6.0N 8716-60. They are 593mm long (even though they say 590 on the box!) and when fitted to the X they need no spacer and when fitted to either the R or Z require a 40mm spacer which should have been supplied in the box. You should be fine with what you have been sent. FYI the OE XTR springs are 633mm long and have no spacer as standard. The XTZ's OE springs are 583mm and have a 50mm spacer fitted as standard, which makes the overall length the same as the R at 633mm. The XTX with its shorter travel front end takes the 593mm spring with no spacer either with OE or the Ohlins springs. Hope that helps. I'd guess (?) OTR have springs that are old stock from the days when three versions were available and just happen to be labelled XT660X. Bit naughty as they should have either told you, or amended the sticker on the box so you knew what was going on. |

Pleiades, thanks a lot!!!
Now everything is "almost" clear. Only one last question... I already opened the forks and under the caps there is a long tube like a long spacer. Correct me if I am wrong. I should install the hlins springs, above of them the hlins spacers and above of them the OE yamaha tube spacer and then the caps? Thanks again!!!

Yours must be a late model then which has has the same KYB short spring/long spacer set up as the post-2012 XTZs?
Just remove the OE spring and spacer that is in there and replace with the spring and spacer that's in the Ohlins box. If you lay your OE spring and spacer on the the floor and measure the total length of the two, it should be near on 633mm. The Ohlins spring and it's spacer together should measure the same 633mm. |

I ordered a set of OHLINS fork springs for my 2007 XTX.
I have been using Kev's fork spacers for 7 years and I was so satisfied with such a low cost upgrade from Kev. Now it is time to upgrade my front end to a new level! Many thanks to Pete-Pleiades for all the help I will have them fitted along with new AFAM steel sprockets and DID VX2 Gold chain in the upcoming 40k service. I will let you guys know of my comments after trying them |

I'm bumping this topic, as i ordered the same stuff as J_maker: did chain, sprockets, and ohlins fork springs (8716-60.) (from OTR)
but that's for a xtz.. and I measured the springs at 593mm like Pleiades wrote they should be. But no spacers in the box. I planned to order Teknik cartridge emulators also, so the 40 mm ohlins spacers would not have been the correct size anyway, right? And i suppose Teknik provides spacers with their emulators, that i will have to cut at the correct size? (40mm- emulator height ) Last edited by Nener; 17-11-15 at 09:42. |
