Road Tyres

What's peoples thoughts on the best current all out road tyres for the Z with grip a priority over long life ???

Cheers

Phil

Between the r and z I've tried a few but always end up going back to Metz tourances

I find they grip good in the dry and satisfactory in the wet for a skinny off road tyre size tyre.

Tired

I'm on my second set of old style dunlop trailmax.
There not full blown road tyres, prob 50/50, but have good wet grip ( used all through this winter) and do well when you run over the ****e left by the local farmer as he pulls out of his tattie field.
The rears have only lasted 2500 miles but that's probably due to my heavy right hand!

It's all subjective, but for what it's worth here's my experience/opinion of road-only tyres on the Z...

I've tried Battle Wings, Conti Trail Attack, Dunlop Trailmax TR91 (not the ones that Posiden's using) on the Z. Out of those three, the Trailmax TR91 was my favourite in terms of handling and grip, they just felt really nice, well matched to the bike and my riding. To be fair though, the Bridgestones and Contis were good too and they all lasted about the same. About 3 - 3.5K miles on the rear, and double on the front (although I only ever had one set of each and changed the front when only half worn). Any of them would be a good road-only tyre.

Personally, I never got on with the OE Tourance. For me, they were OK, but no more than that. They lasted better than the three others mentioned, but not by much (about 4K miles on the rear). Biggest issue I found with them was their nervous/twitchy behaviour on white lines and road imperfections; I used to clench up every time I had to change lanes on the motorway or cross the centre of the road to make an overtake! At least they were predictable though - I knew it was going to happen!

There is a surprisingly decent selection of road-focussed tyres in sizes that fit the Z. Another couple worth a look are the Michelin Anakee 3 and Pirelli Scorpion Trail.

Of course, everyone has their own opinion on tyres, we all ride differently, so what suits one person may well not suit another. Unfortunately the only way to find what works best for you involves spending money - "buying and trying".

Hi I have Avon Roadriders on they are okish in the dry but not so good in the wet I do like the way the bike rolls into corners and they seem to be lasting ok. Steve.

As Pleiades say its all very subjective. I have had very good experiences with Tourances on other bikes (Tiger 955i) good grip, great handling and lasted up to 18 k km.

I got a pair of Anakee 3 mountes last fall on my Tenere 2011 just before I stored the bike for the winter and its only a few weeks since I got the bike out from winter storage (long winters here in Norway....) but they seem to be quite good. Feels very neutral in handling and the grip seems good. How long they last I cannot tell as I have only around 1500 km on them.
