Surging
About to look at a low mileage 2011 660r with view to buy. Does anyone know if the problematic XT surging issues have been sorted out by this year please?

I believe so, but no direct experience. For what it's worth, my 2006 is far better than the 2004 I used to have, to the point where I don't see any need to modify it. It's a little chunky off idle, but nothing you can't ride around and call it character. I think Yamaha improved the ECU over time, and I'm told that by 07 they had it sorted on the R, so I would reckon a 2011 would be fine. At least, that's how I would be approaching a possible purchase, i.e. not worried in the slightest

I recently bought a low mileage 2009 XTR, and the surging doesn't bother me. Coming from an inline four, I DO notice something odd holding constant speed in 2nd or 3rd around 30mph, but nothing that I would have commented on if it weren't for a million forum threads alerting me to a "problem". As Black Dog says, it's character!
I think it's easy to read about things like surging, buy a bike and then go looking for a problem. In reality, it's a thumper - it is what it is. Get it and enjoy it! |

From what I understand, 2009 onwards has an "improved" ECU. My 2008 rode nicely, without significant issue when I test rode it. Then I changed the exhaust system which pronounced the issue to a state that made the bike less than enjoyable to live with.
However, should you find yourself in this position, there is a help available from the resident guru (Kev) on this forum. My bike is now (again) very enjoyable to ride, with the new exhaust. Good luck! |

The 11's still have a small amount of surging, you can always fit one of my 2012 O2 controllers which will stop 99% of the surging

2012 02 mod?
What's that then Kev? So much info to wade through, but couldn't find what you meant. Is it a difficult thing for someone with very basic mechanic skills to fit? Cheers.
