newbie questions,

hi, im currently looking at getting a xt660x as i fancy a change from current bike gsxr750, what i really wanted to know is how does a xt660x cope offroad? just a little bit of green laning and some winter riding really! can i fit the bigger front wheel off a xt660r? and have some nobblys or is it not that simple? thank you chris

not sure as I've not had an x but I've seen a few people put on Avon something's which have quiet and ages dive tread pattern and do off roading but I would say gravel with a few rocks is as much as you'd want to go.

as for changing tyres/wheels not sure anyone's went from x to r wheels but there R a few who have bought an r and went to x wheels. search jasxt and look at some of his older posts. means if you get the r you can keep the big wheels for knobbliest and get the x wheels and put some sticky rubber on

Definately a change of tyre will suit, however it is not that straightforward to fit larger rims on the front wheel because of the disc brake fittings are non matching between the 2 sets of forks.

As maxwell said a succesful tyre is the Avon Distanzia which has a good thread pattern not too off road and not too road like but which works well with both.

I am looking at the new Continental on off road tyre which is available in 17" size for the front wheel of your X. I too wanted to have two sets of wheels, 17" for road and then 18/21 for the winter and gentle off road but the X and the R front ends are totally NOT compatible, brakes and forks are not the same. Good luck!!

Ok well thats a help. If I can get another set of x wheels and have a set of off-road ish capable tyres that i can fit if i want I'm happy as I don't plan on going mad and jumping etc it's just for a bit of green laning as I'll mainly use it on the road with a decent set of sticky tyres.
