No light, just a flashing gauge and the F-trip starts. I've got 40 miles out of mine so far on F-trip. No pushed it much further than that so far, but I think that the reserve amount is approx 1 gallon.

I think it was 6.8L. I normally ride ca. 130km on reserve. The max I had to fill up was 24.6L.

I've taken the bike to 70mls on the f-trip,, then I chickened out and filled up, I recall that there was still a few litres left though.
The Tenere fuel gauge was a black op by BMW, who wanted to try and confuse the hell out of Tenere owners thus making their own bike appear superior. Never trust your fuel gauge, it's evil and it lies....

Too true. Mine used to be predictable, but now it seems to be overly pessimistic. Still gets better than 20km/l with panniers on in general use, but the bars plunge towards reserve earlier. Sigh. When will I ever learn that Italian (European?) bikes are a menace to the mind. |

So a safe 40 miles then on flashing gauge

Ok guess that makes sense. I thought i had read the mods made it more fuel efficient

I was thinking after I wrote that and only one bike I've ever worked on has become more economical after tuning, and that was the Caponord I had that I used Tuneboy on to map the ECU. All the others have always seen a drop in economy.

I have the Yamaha diagnostic tool which enables you to read the air intake temperature value the ECU is being sent, which helped a lot setting up the fuelling mod.
In order to maintain the same differential between real ambient and measured intake temperature (in other words fooling the ECU to think its colder than it is) you do have to increase the setting as temperatures drop. Generally its not a massive issue as ambient temperatures in the UK don't vary greatly, so realistically you'd be OK and within range keeping it the same. However, it becomes more of an issue at the extremes: If ambient temperatures drop below -5 you do need to start dialling in much bigger increases in additional resistance to gain the same level of "ECU fooling" you had at say 20C. The same applies if you get temperatures above 30C, but it goes the other way, the resistance needs reducing in much bigger steps. Having said all that, just dial in whatever makes the bike feel best and you won't be far wrong! |
