2004 XT-R 575miles!!!

ok, I know there is a lot of chat about fuel surging problems on early XT's, and i know most of you are probably sick of repeating the same thing to new guys.....however i Have just bought my first ever bike, It's a 2004 xt-r with only 400 miles on the clock when i picked it up!! it now has 575 miles! I didn't experience fuel problems on the 100 mile ride home and for the 1st week of using it. Now, however im getting cut out's left right and centre. it will idle ok but then when i put into gear and pull away, it cuts out. there just seems to be a big lack of power. I had a plastic jerry can of fuel that had been sitting in my garage for 5 months that i put in the bike just to use it up. I doubt it would have been dirty etc so im sure it cant just be as simple as dirty fuel?

If i do need a power commander, are they cheap? i've seen them on ebay for 15 but do they actually do the trick? or will i need a "propper one"?

regards, T

Exclamation Petrol conditioner

Sounds like dodgy fuel (it can go off when stored for long periods). The volatile components of the fuel (the most combustable compounds) can evaporate off leaving less potent compounds, therefore lower octane. Try some fuel conditioner. May up your Octane rating enough to stop the surge.

If that doesn't work, it may be one for Kev's vast expertise.

BTW: Is Markie Dans still in business? Did my best to keep them busy back in the day :-)

mr Boneman, Thanks very much for reply! I bought a new spark-plug last week just to keep under the seat for a spare, so i popped the old one out and put the new one in and bish bash bosh! now running better than ever!! simple as that! big relief its not the electrics and having to muck around with anything else like that!

Markies is still on the Go not been in for a while now but they always do a good pint

Hello and welcome to XT660.com Tinbopaloobop - a bit of a mouthful!

I'd seriously recommend an oil and filter change too, as soon as possible, as I'd guess it's quite likely the same oil's been in the motor for 8 years! The brake fluid and coolant will have deteriorated badly too. For a small outlay changing all fluids would be a good bet.

Hello and welcome,

lots of great info on here, you will never be stuck.

If you want a bit more performance and less surging try a DNA 1 & 2 filter change for the airbox along with a kev fuel mod - well worth it - the best mod you can do to this bike.

Nice bit of the country you are from, used to go to Oban for the shopping every 2 weeks when I lived out on the wild west.
Also enjoyed the loop of Oban /Glen Coe / Tyndrum / Taynuilt.

Have fun.

How the bike is running now...

Cheers for the replies guys!

I have changed the oil and coolant in the bike and also filters. With the new s. plug everything seems to be great. Very, very pleased with my new toy!
This forum is fantastic to get info on.

The glencoe loop is great! My dad used to do it on an old rd 250 and a honda 400-4 back inn the day so now its my turn to stop at the green welly for a bacon roll!
