my problems so far with my xt660r
well, it's a bit hard for me o start, but i'm starting to be a bit confused if i like my 2007 xt660r or not. so the history. when i bought it, it was 2 years old with 2000 miles on the clock. i now the previous owner - my neibourgh - so he had the bike from new and looked after it very well - never in the rain, or off road, only the ocasional sunday ride - hence the low miles. the i bought it. i live and work in london, so i travel to work and back, i do about 1000 miles a month on it. the problems started at 4000 miles: head bearings - top and bottom of the triple clamp, around 8000 miles both fork seals had failed and now at 15000 miles i have an electrical problem - the ignition fuse keeps blowing - even the mechanics at my local yamaha garage have not find a solution yet. they have my bike for the last 8 days and are as baffled as i am. still not sorted yet. i'm dreading to think about the cost yet. the bike was never abused, never off road, only to work and back. it'm my 9th bike but i never had anyproblems with a bike so new and with so few miles.
it is just me or you had similar problems? |

No.1 Be optimistic - We have the solution here!
Join the XT Supporters ( click here ) and then start a thread in the Ask Kev section ( click here ) and consider it problem solved as Kev will take you step by step through all the options which you can then pass to those spanner monkeys at your local Yamaha garage p.s.: before going back to the Yamaha Garage print the attached picture and show it to them for reference. head bearings are a well known problem, seems they never get enough grease in the factory. No big deal - if you know about it.
Forkseals may fail after 15000 miles - no big deal. The real problem - as CaptMoto allready mentioned - seems to be your Yamaha garage! Those pro's can't locate an electrical problem within 8 days? Get your bike to somebody, who knows what he's doing.. well, good luck anyway! salu2, Joe

They may have had the bike for 8 days but how hard are they looking? A small electrical prob is not a big earner so if they start changing expensive bits or talk big money, get the bike back until you have had a think yourself and had some feedback through here.
Blowing fuses is often a shorting wire somewhere and they can be a PIA to find but are usually inexpensive to fix. It usually involves a careful and systematic inspection of the loom and all the connectors. Just 'cos they are dealers it doesn't mean they know things |

Turn everything off, tank removed, then connect a 55w head light bulb from one side of the fuse which is blowing & the other side of the bulb to the + side of the battery, now move the wiring loom around, as soon as there is a short to earth on that wire the bulb will light up. Hey presto you have found the short.

thanks for the reply gents, the electrical fault: the bike rides fine until i hit traffic, the fan kicks in, i'm first at the traffic lights, lights turn green, fuse blows. i change the fuse, blows again after 10 meters. i put a 20amp fuse in to get to work, i get to work eventualy, i got home - another one fuse blown. so i can use the bike up to one point, when the bike begins to overheat and after the fan kicks in. AND THE GUYS FROM YAMAHA NOW ALL THIS. before i let the bike at yamaha, my neighbour - a car mechanic by trade- had a look, tried to find the short, but after about 3-4 hours he gave up baffled. ( all the street goes to him with car problems, he even fixed mine a few imes, so i trust him). then i decided to go to yamaha, hopeing they'll fix the problem quick. but hey... it did not hapen. and yes, we checked the fan and it seems ok. probably i'll go the garage tomorow and get the bike back and start again
