xtx conversion, possible or not?

Hello All!

In October i'm due to go on a trip with my dad and his mates to Morocco and cruise through the Atlas mountains for 2 or 3 weeks. We, well I, have a few issues. Firstly does anybody know the best way to get insurance for this type of trip? I have read that it is possible to purchase at the border however I am not willing to risk a whole trip based on this info as you can imagine. I have also read about a green card insurance policy but nobody/nowhere has actually given me black and white info about this 'green card.'

Secondly, and most importantly.... I own a 660x, now obviously these bikes as standard are not suitable for a trip of this nature, but would it be possible in any way to convert it so it has the 21" front hoop off the xtr and some nice nobbly tires? I only ask because I am so used to the bike now and it would save me alot of hassle with the insurance company (changing bikes etc). The other option for me is to pull some money out of my savings, buy a really decent XTZ, do the trip on it and then sell it when i get home and loose a few hundred quid.

If anyone has done the trip, has any info/advice, hit me up with a reply on this thread please!

Cheers

Tom

Ive heard of a few people thinking about the conversion but heard little else from there. Mildlifecrisis did do a far bit of touring/off roading on his XTX with diz's tyres on but if you havent been off roading before im not too sure how it would feel.

Speed is the answer to most off roading, go slowly and for 99% of the time most bikes could do what most people term as off roading, ie non tarmac roads. For the rest of the time its lightness and skills

If you have the resources to buy and then resell a 660Z, surely that would be no more expensive that trying to mod your XTX for the trip and would mean you'd be doing it on a bike well suited to the task. And without risking the condition of youor current steed.
As maxwell123455 says, go slowly and you'll get there on almost anything but that won't necessarily be much fun and proper dirt bikes are more resistant to crash damage eg. dented exhaust pipe.
Of course, do that and you might discover you like the Z and decide to keep it...

Regarding the paperwork, I believe this site is run by a member on here, and was suggested last time Morocco was mentioned:

Thanks for the feedback everyone, Il start keeping an eye out for XTZ's i think...like 'the pheasant' said...would probably be cheaper to do this, especially if i can find a decent bike for decent price!

Thanks Uberthumper for that info on the website, seems useful. I have heard that some insurance companies will provide the green card for a small price, does anyone know if this is most companies or just a few?

Finally, anybody know of anyone with a nice kitted out Z to sell me?

It is possible to conver a X to an R, I even had a look at a new X that had had the conversion done at the Laeks meeting last weekend. Rooster I think is his user name. To sum up the rear wheel is a straight fit, Rooster changed the whole front end to an R giving him more compliant off road suspension as the X is too hard off road. I should know I did an off road training course on my X Friday and I was keeping up will all but the fastest of riders.

I say dont bother and get the right bike to start with. Less insurance hassles etc.

Thanks Tony660x, I think its looking like I will find a XTZ and use that then sell it on. Less hassle like you say. Noticed you have PCIII in your list of mods, what sort of difference does it make?

Lets just say I am not big into modding stuff but as you can see thats pretty much the only mod done, that is to state its sorts out the poor fuelling on the bike. Totally worth having this even if you dont performance mod your bike.
