Lower Handlebar Mountings

(for the Tenere)

In my quest to transform a good bike into a great bike, I'm looking at the handlebars, to be more precise the handlebar mountings.

I fitted a set of bar risers last night, and I've noticed alot more bar movement since fitting them. Now before I start to strip down the mounting assembly I just wondered had anyone done this before and could they answer a query?

Is there any rubber in the assembly at all ? the reason I ask is that there is movement between the Upper Bracket (4) and the Lower Handlebar Holder (1). With a set of 30mm risers this is much more noticable, possibly to the extent that I may remove the risers and look to go for new bars instead.

Or is it possible that the lower nuts on the Lower Handlebar Holder are a little loose ? But at 32Nm they aren't the tightest in the first place!

I guess I'll find out tonight, but in the meantime, have you had it to bits ?? any comments ??

There's rubber in No4, where No1 goes, don't know if there is some metal hidden in there aswell.

After an off, my LHS No1 is slightly askew and doesn't want to right itself, took it to bits, though I've refrained from getting the lump hammer oot.

Thanks Pete, I sort of suspected that, but there's nowt in the workshop manual or the Parts list to confirm it.

at least my clamps aren't falling apart!

Happened to me as well. It was fixed by just removing and putting it back in place.
Could it be that the bolt itself is crooked?

I had the No1 off and gave it a good looking at with me square, bars looked ok along with everything else. Put it all back on the bike and it's off.

You only notice if you have a close look and doesn't effect me riding so I've just left it. Probly just needs a good bash with a hammer.

you know this wont make any difference, dont you?

if they end up at the same height the amount of leverage on the rubber bush will end up the same so it'll move just as much...

just thought i'd mention it before you go and spend more money on bars.

I did consider this, I'm still trying to figure out if the movement is due to the 'longer lever' , or movement within the riser/holder/bar (and the square it forms) assembly. in other words is it the 'square' that is moving or the whole assembly moving in the rubbers.

In any case I'll try it before doing anything, and it's not the end of the world anyway

Clearly, any movement there is going to impact the vibrations at the bar end, so I'll not be rushing into anything (although I can always put the bars on the TTR, it could do with a bit of a rise too)
