To powercommander or not to powercommande that is the question!
Hi all
I've been looking through all the posts concerning the fuel mods which can be made to the XT660. I've decided that my personal preference would be to firstly try richening the mixture via the dash and if this doesn't satisfy go along the power commander route as I don't want to mess around with cutting wires etc. My questions are simple really but I can't find an answer any where on the forum as most people seem to go with the Kev Mod. 1 - How much effect will the dash richening have on my Jan 06 XT660R? I don't expect miracles but less jerkiness would be appreciated as I spend most of my time doing CBT training at 15-20mph. 2 - Will a power Commander V with a standard European Map cure the jerky throttle? The bike doesn't seem to surge it's just a bit jerky on and off the throttle at slow speed, from reading these forums it seems that this is mostly caused by the standard lean mixture. I can't get a custom map as we don't have a dyno centre in Jersey and I don't really want to shell out almost �300 for a minor improvement as I'd rather ride around it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers! Logan |

I dont think the PC5 will fit your bike your best bet is to go with a PC3 and custom map or the Kev mod

the CO number only affects riding between 15 - 18 I believe on the TPS, which equates to about crawling speed, or there abouts.
A PCV Cured my jerky throttle on my 09 xtx with Kevs PC3 map. I will hopefully soon, next month buy an autotune to further improve it. My 2 cents.

Get the PCIII and get the best map off this site to suit your bike. It will make it about as perfect as you will be able to get it. They are worth it. Ideally dyno is the best route but why bother when the maps from here will do the job perfectly and save you a fortune as well.

Don't forget that the dash tinkering only affects the first band of the rev range, not the whole range, i.e. from idleing up to 2500 rev. It is done so you don't stall the bike when the mixture is too lean. So for the full works you are either going to need a Kev Mod or a PCIII plus one of our maps. (our maps are free to all our XT Supporters) a tenner well spent.

I've not bothered with a powercommander simply because of cost. I have done the Kev Fuel mod, which certainly helps. Its relatively cheap, easy to fit and only took a week to arrive. Other things to try are removing the snorkel from the airbox and drilling some holes in the sides ( this is the Kev airbox mod ). Also check your cush drive as you mentioned previously that your chain has had it! You can pack the cush drive out with old innertube, believe me it makes quite a difference.
When you have sorted your chain out make sure its not too slack! Good Luck.
Then when thats all done get a DNA stage 2 air filter. |

The Throttle position sensor reads between 16 to 100, when the ECU gets a reading of 19 from the TPS it will run a fix fuel map, the CO1 adjustment will have no effect after a TPS reading of 18. By adjusting the CO1 in the dash, it will only help part throttle between 16 & 18, I always recommend one to in crease their CO1 by at least 10 from the factory setting, as it will help in the closed & just open throttle postion. 2 - Will a power Commander V with a standard European Map cure the jerky throttle? A PCV will fit on any XT660 with or without a O2 sensor, the only benefits you would have with a PCV over the PCIII is one extra adjustable fuel throttle zone. We have a large selection of custom fuel maps in the ASK KEV section for supporting members if you can't get your bike on a Dyno. The XT's fuelling is far from perfect & can be improved by fitting a fuelling device. A Power Commander is by far the best fuelling device, if you can afford one I would get one, a custom fuel map is the way to go if you can. By correcting the fuel map by adding a Power commander with your own dyno custom fuel map made for your bike, you will get a much better ride, but it will not cure your problem totally. Thanks to all for the responses, this site is wicked and I will be becoming a supporting member very shortly!
XT660's might not be perfect from the crate but all that means is that we can tinker with them to our hearts content! The thing I'm most impressed with is that they have character which a lot of the old XT600s were critisised for not having after the original XT500. Thanks once again. Cheers Logan

Mine was quite awful from the crate, tweaking the CO from the dash helped a little but the PCIII, DNA 1&2 gave it more oomph and smoothed it totally.
I now have a 950SM as well and the XTX part throttle is easily as smooth as the carburettored KTM. |

Thanks for the input Pauli I'll be playing around with the CO in the next week or so and will definitly be looking at buying a Power Commander and DNA filter in the next couple of months, what is the consensus with regards to the DNA filters is 1 or 2 better for normal commuting?
