OEM panniers and top box

Hi all. Can anyone tell me why Yamaha tell you not to use the side panniers and top box together?

Thanks for your help in advance. New to forum. What a great resource.

Cheers

Nope.

Apart from the fact it looks odd - the angle of the top box isn't in line with the panniers.

I used both for a long run both fully loaded without problems. I suspect it's to do with the loading on the rear of the bike, or maybe to do with stability at speed, but it's just a guess.

Here in Finland ->

and here in Greece ->

Same trip.

Thanks Gas. Certainly looks quirky - just like the bike itself.

The straw that breaks the camel's back?

So, if it's down to load, if I was to have my wife (yes dear, you're still as thin as when I first met you), side panniers and top box on the bike, I might be asking a little too much from the bike?

I guess that would be down to weight..... 190Kgs I think is the total (you, her, luggage and the make-up bag).

Yamaha specify a paultry 5Kgs per pannier/top box - just silly if you ask me. Who takes just 10Kg's of luggage on a long haul trip ! (cept perhaps that loon on his R1, or Dan walsh)

Givi also specify 4-6kg for their panniers and top boxes. It's just a matter of covering their arses. But the racks and boxes can usually carry a whole lot more without a problem

No three Boxes together? What a barmy idea, as I thought when reading the Owners Handbook

Personally, I think it may be due to some sort of legality issue, a disclaimer via the backdoor. If the bike is fully loaded then they state , if memory is correct, that the top speed should be dressed down to an average 60 - 70 mph, fully leaden with side and top boxes just might make the bike a little unstable.

I have a MetalMule Stubby Top Box, a pair of Skinny (31ltr) Panniers and a Touratech tank bag, fully loaded and having done 2600 miles across Europe, I can tell ya that, speaking for myself, there was NO PROBLEMS WHATSOEVER.

Its a new, modern bike with a strong sub frame that is well up to the job, unlike Yamahas own Boxes, say I.

Ill leave the rest to ya own making
